PC Athletic Programs Ranked In The Sears Cup Top-20

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College Athletic Program is ranked 19th in the nation, according to the latest Sears Director's Cup rankings. North Carolina is first with Stanford, Wisconsin, UCLA and Nebraska rounding out the nation's top five. Providence is third in the BIG EAST Conference behind Notre Dame (eighth) and Connecticut (ninth).

The Sears Director's Cup is presented annually by the nation's athletic directors and is designed to recognize institutions that maintain a broad based athletic program. It measures achievements in a total of 10 men's and 10 women's sports, awarding points based on their level of excellence.

Providence's standing was based on the strength of its men's and women's cross country programs which finished third and ninth in the country, respectively.

Providence College's winter sports' programs are also achieving a measurable level of success. The men's basketball team currently boasts an 18-6 record and is in second place in the East Division of the BIG EAST Conference. Men's ice hockey is 16-8-4 and is ranked ninth in the nation while the women's ice hockey team is 16-9-3 and ranked ninth nationally.

Beyond the athletic achievements, Providence College's student-athletes are also maintaining a high level of excellence in the classroom. Fifteen of the College's 21 teams earned a GPA of 3.00 or better during the first semester. Further, 109 student-athletes earned Dean's List honors with 13 of them recording a perfect 4.00 GPA in the fall including Mark Brady (men's lacrosse), Melissa Crowley (women's soccer), Brian Evans (men's soccer), Kate Gall (women's track and cross country), Matthew Jarvis (men's tennis), Kara Lukens (field hockey), Jeff Matrullo (men's track and cross country), Daniella Miele (women's volleyball), John O'Mara (men's track and cross country), Jessica Romaniuk (women's track and cross country), Jaclyn Ross (women's soccer), Heather Smith (women's swimming and diving) and Katie Willett (field hockey).
