Grace Van Volsen scored twice in her collegiate debut.
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Providence College women's hockey team defeated Sacred Heart, 4-2, on Friday, Sept. 25, at Martire Family Arena in Fairfield, Conn. in the 2026-27 season opener. The Friars improve to 1-0-0, while Sacred Heart moves to 0-1-0. Grace Van Volsen (Whitby, Ontario) recorded her first multi-goal game scoring twice while Audrey Knapp (Stevens Point, Wis.) tallied two assists.

GAME FLOW & NOTES
1st Period
-Providence opened the scoring at 13:56 of the period from sophomore Hanna Olson (Andover, Minn.) for her first collegiate goal. The assisted was awarded junior Cali Cerruti (Norwell, Mass.).
-Sacred Heart tied the game at one at 14:23 on a power play goal from Isabella Chaput. The Pioneers goal was assisted by Bria Holm and Maddie Smith.
-Providence quickly answered at 17:41 from Elizabeth Janovski (Stouffville, Ontario) for her first collegiate goal to make it 2-1. The goal was assisted by senior Kiara Kraft (Churchville, N.Y.).
2nd Period
-Providence struck first again as Grace Van Volsen scored her first career goal at 17:41 to put the Friars up 3-1. The goal was assisted by sophomore Bella Paolucci (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) and Knapp.
-The Friars killed a 1:30 five-on-three power play against the Pioneers.
-Van Volsen scored her second goal of the night at 14:21 for her first multi-goal game of her career and the first for the Friars 2026-27 season. The goal was assisted by Knapp for her second of the night and junior Emma Hofbauer (Vomberbach, Austria).
-The Pioneers answered with their second goal, as Sara Gerdel scored at 16:44 to make it 4-2. The Sacred Heart goal was assisted by Amanda Ranaudo and Katie Downey.
3rd Period
-Providence killed off another four-on-three power play.
-Both teams skated scoreless for the final 20 minutes.
NOTES
-Freshman goaltender Bianca Birrittieri (Flower Mound, Texas) made 16 saves in the victory.
-The Friars win marks Nicole Norton's first career win as head coach.
-Tonight's matchup marked the first time the Friars and Pioneers faced off during the regular season.
-Three different Friars scored their first collegiate goals in tonight's game.
-This is Knapp's 18th multi-point game of her career.
