PROVIDENCE R.I. — Providence College Athletics welcomed former Arizona State basketball standout Stevin Hedake Smith to campus this week for a powerful educational session on the risks of sports betting. The Friar men's and women's basketball programs were on hand for the educational speech. The event, held in partnership with EPIC Global Solutions and the NCAA, was part of an ongoing national initiative to educate and protect student-athletes from the dangers of gambling.

Smith shared his personal journey — from a small wager that spiraled into point-shaving and ultimately led to prison time — offering a candid look at how quickly gambling can derail a promising career. His message emphasized the importance of integrity, focus and resisting outside pressures, including social media harassment from bettors seeking insider information.

This is part of my healing process, Smith said. I want to make a difference because this devastates the game. I made a mistake, I paid the price and now I want to help student-athletes avoid the same path.

The session sparked meaningful dialogue among Providence College's men's and women's basketball teams, with student-athletes asking questions about Smith's experience and the long-term consequences of his decisions. The program also addressed the growing trend of direct messages from bettors targeting players online — a reality many student-athletes face today.

Providence College Athletic Director Steve Napolillo praised the initiative, saying: Gambling is becoming an increasing challenge in college athletics, and education is the key to prevention. We are grateful to EPIC and the NCAA for bringing this important program to our campus and to Stevin Smith for sharing his story. His honesty and vulnerability made a lasting impact on our student-athletes.

Providence College is proud to provide these educational opportunities as part of a nationwide effort led by EPIC and the NCAA. Since 2022, the initiative has reached over 80,000 student-athletes, coaches, and administrators at more than 270 schools across all three divisions, making it the largest program of its kind globally.
