Women's Hoops Defeated By No. 5/5 UConn, 77-40

Marta Morales Romero netted 15 points to lead the Friars.

 
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team played at Amica Mutual Pavilion for the first time since 2010 when it hosted No. 5/5 UConn on Sunday, Feb. 9. The Huskies jumped out to a 23-9 lead after one quarter of action and defeated Providence, 77-40. The Friars dropped to 10-16 overall (3-10 BIG EAST), while the Huskies improved to 22-3 (13-0 BIG EAST). Marta Morales Romero paced the Friars with 15 points, while Paige Bueckers netted a game-high 20 for UConn.
 
1ST QUARTER:
• UConn started the game with a 7-0 run until Morales Romero got Providence on the board at the 6:00 minute mark.
• Providence inched with four (9-5) at the media timeout (4:17).
• UConn closed the final 2:36 of the quarter with a 10-0 run to take a 23-9 lead. 
 
2ND QUARTER:
Brynn Farrell opened the scoring for Providence in the second quarter, but the Huskies responded with a 9-0 run to force a Friars timeout with 7:30 on the clock (32-11).
Nariah Scott halted the run with a three in transition at the 5:25 mark (32-14).
• UConn scored six-unanswered points to close the half and took a 40-16 lead into halftime.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• UConn opened the third with a 12-0 run to grab a 52-16 lead.
• Farrell hit a pair of free throws to get Providence on the board at the 5:31 mark.
• The Huskies outscored the Friars 29-16 overall in the third. Azzi Fudd scored 17 points in the quarter for UConn.
• Morales Romero scored seven points in the frame for Providence.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• Both teams scored eight points each in the fourth quarter.
• Connecticut earned a 77-40 victory.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Providence played at the AMP for the first time since Feb. 6, 2010 vs. then-No. 8/11 West Virginia. The Friars moved to 9-10 all-time at the AMP and 0-3 vs. Connecticut.
• Morales Romero recorded 15 points on 6-12 shooting and added five rebounds, one assist and one steal.
Olivia Olsen hauled in a game-high 10 rebounds and has registered double-digit boards in each of the last four games. She added five points, one assist, one block and one steal.
• Farrell recorded eight points and four rebounds, while Grace Efosa added seven points and three boards.
• The Friars edged the Huskies in rebounding, 37-36.

• The Friars will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 12 against Xavier. The game will be played at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio and is scheduled to tip-off at 7:00 p.m.
