The Friars will play five games from Feb. 14-16.
PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The Providence College softball team will participate in the Bubly Invitational hosted by the University of Florida. The Friars will compete in five games from Feb. 14-17 in Gainesville, Fla. The team will open tournament play on February 14 against Binghamton at 11:30 a.m., followed by a matchup against the host team, No. 2 Florida, at 4:30 p.m. On February 15, Providence will take on Boston College at 9:00 a.m. before facing No. 12 Duke at 4:30 p.m. The Friars will wrap up tournament action on February 16 with a rematch against Binghamton at 10:00 a.m.
"We are so excited to continue our very challenging preseason schedule," Head Coach Kelsey Christensen said. "We are headed down to Florida with the mindset of learning and building towards our goals for this year."
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE
Providence enters Bubly Invitational play with a 0-4 overall record after dropping four games in its season opening weekend at the Gamecock Invitational hosted by South Carolina in Columbia, S.C.
The Friars completed the 2024 season with a 22-23-1 overall record, including an 11-13 mark in the BIG EAST. Providence finished tied for sixth in the final BIG EAST standings.
Providence returns 17 student-athletes, including senior Hanna Aldrich (Taunton, Mass.), junior Elisa Smith (Glen Allen, Va.) and sophomore Cameron Dunn (Bothell, Wash.).
Aldrich started all four games at the Gamecock invitational. She finished with a team-best .583 on-base percentage, five hits, two RBI, one run and a .500 batting average. Aldrich finished her 2024 season with a career-best .328 batting average. In 131 at-bats, she recorded 43 hits, including five doubles, two triples and two home runs, while driving in 25 runs. Over the past two seasons with the Friars, she has maintained a .335 batting average, with 53 hits, 34 runs scored, a .449 slugging percentage and 42 putouts.
Dunn appeared in all four games for PC last weekend. The infielder registered four hits and a team-high three RBI including a two-run RBI double against East Carolina last week. She finished with a .600 slugging percentage, .583 on-base percentage and 10 put-outs.
Smith kicked off her third season for the Friars with three hits, one RBI and four put outs. The outfielder has amassed 16 runs, 13 hits, seven RBI and 37 putouts.
The Friars welcome one transfer, Alannah Hopkins (Sylva, N.C.) and two freshmen, Valentina Iula (Westbury, N.Y.) and Becca Weaver (Cary, Ill.).
SCOUTING BINGHAMTON
Binghamton enters Bubly play with a 3-2 record. The Bearcats opened their season at the Stetson Tournament where they lost, 1-0, to Stetson and split games against FDU and University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
The Bearcats finished their 2024 campaign with a 33-18 overall record, including a 14-6 record in AEC play that earned them a share of the America East regular season title. Binghamton was picked to finish second to UAlbany in the conference preseason poll, even receiving a pair of first-place votes.
Junior Brianna Roberts, sophomores Elisa Allen and Emma Lawson as well as graduate students Lindsey Walters and Brianna Santos have all been selected to the 2025 America East Preseason All-Conference Team.
Lawson finished Stetson Tournament play with a .533 batting average and eight hits that consisted of four doubles. She finished with seven RBI and a .800 slugging percentage.
Santos concluded opening weekend going 7-17 at the plate. Across 17 at-bats, Santos registered seven hits including one double, one triple and two RBI. The utility player finished with a .558 slugging percentage and a .474 on-base percentage.
Roberts rounded out last week with a 2.25 ERA across two games. She finished with a 1-1 record, conceding three earned runs while striking out seven.
SCOUTING NO. 2 FLORIDA
Florida enters this weekend with a 7-0 record. The Gators most recently defeated Jacksonville, 10-1, in five innings.
Florida is currently ranked 2nd in the first week of the NFCA/ Gorout Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll. The Gators were picked to finish second in the SEC and received six first-place votes. The team was also ranked No. 1 in the Softball America's Preseason Top 25 poll.
Florida concluded the 2024 season with a 54-14 overall record, including a 17-7 mark in SEC play. The Gators earned a Southeastern Conference Tournament Championship title and a trip to the Women's College World Series.
The Gators return NCFA Player of the Year, Jocelyn Erickson, and four of its five National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American honorees: Keagan Rothrock, Reagan Walsh, Korbe Otis and Erickson. The team also added three transfers, Kenleigh Cahalan (Alabama), Rylee Holtorf (Washington) and Kara Hammock (UNCW), as well as seven true freshmen.
Erickson, Otis, Rothrock, Walsh and Kendra Falby were each named to the 2025 Softball America's Preseason Top-100 Player List and to the 2025 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Top 53 Watch List.
Freshman Taylor Schumaker leads the team currently with a .550 batting average (11-20), a 1.550 slugging percentage and six home runs. She was named SEC Co-Freshman of the Week after helping lead the team to a 6-0 start by hitting six home runs during opening weekend at the USF-Rawlings Invitational.
Rothrock leads in the circle with a 0.00 ERA and a 3-0 record. The sophomore holds 10 strikeouts across 14 innings so far this season.
SCOUTING BOSTON COLLEGE
Boston College begins Bubly play with a 3-2 overall record, having secured victories against Indiana State and LIU while falling to Boston University and splitting its matchups with Florida Gulf Coast University at the FGCU Tournament.
The Eagles finished last season with a 30-24 overall record including a 9-15 record in ACC play. BC returns six starters including seniors Abby Dunning and Hannah Slike. Freshmen first baseman, Adriana Martinez and pitcher, Bailey Kendziroski, were named to Softball America's 2025 Freshman Watchlist.
Slike finished the opening weekend going 5-for-14 at the plate (.357), recording five hits, three RBIs and one run while posting a .357 slugging percentage. Last season, she led the team in nearly every offensive category, topping the charts with a .341 batting average, .946 OPS, 62 hits, 27 runs, eight home runs and a .568 slugging percentage.
Dunning, the Eagles' leading pitcher, was named to the 2025 College Sports Evaluation Preseason Top-50 Pitchers list. The senior earned the 30th spot in the rankings and was one of five ACC players to make the list. Dunning made one appearance last weekend, pitching seven innings in the team's 2-1 victory at FGCU. She recorded three shutout innings, allowing five hits and one run while maintaining a 0.00 ERA.
SCOUTING NO. 12 DUKE
The Blue Devils head into the weekend with a 3-2 overall record after securing wins over Penn State, Kentucky and No. 24 Mississippi State while falling to No. 15 Missouri and No. 21 Northwestern at last week's NFCA Leadoff Classic.
Duke is currently ranked 12th in the first week of the NFCA/ Gorout Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll. The team was selected first in the 2025 ACC Softball Preseason Poll.
Duke is coming off a strong 2024 campaign that set a program record with a 52-9 overall ledger (No. 4 in RPI), captured an ACC Championship and led the team to its third straight NCAA Super Regional appearance, while advancing to the Women's College World Series for the first time in program history. The Blue Devils maintained one of the nation's best batting averages (.322), averaged 6.52 runs per game (No. 8 in NCAA) and ranked No. 5 in shutouts (20).
Head Coach Marissa Young and her coaching staff were named the 2024 NFCA Southeast Region Staff of the Year.
The Blue Devils returned 11 letterwinners from last season and welcomed eight newcomers, consisting of four freshmen and four transfers. Duke's current freshman class is ranked No.20 in the nation per Extra Innings Softball.
Juniors Cassidy Curd, D'Auna Jennings and Aminah Vega enter this season as preseason favorites. The trio of players were named to the Preseason All-ACC Team, the 2025 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Watch List and to SoftballAmerica's 2025 Top 100 Preason Player Rankings List. Jennings and Vega garnered D1Softball Preseason All-America honors.
Curd, a pitcher, is ranked No. 35 in SoftballAmerica's 2025 Top 100 Preason Player Rankings List. She finished last season with a 13-4 record after 32 appearances inside the circle. Her 1.31 ERA led the ACC and ranked eighth nationally. The left-handed pitcher played a crucial role in the Blue Devils' postseason success, throwing 4.0 hitless innings of relief against Florida State. Curd also earned both wins over Missouri during the 2024 NCAA Super Regional, throwing a career-high 8.1 innings including a game-high seven strikeouts in the series finale. She was also named ACC pitcher of the week twice during the regular season after strong performances against South Dakota State and North Carolina. Curd closed out her opening weekend last week with a 2-0 record on a 1.47 ERA as she threw 17 shutouts and allowed only four earned runs.
Jennings, primarily a centerfielder, comes in at No. 47 on SoftballAmerica's 2025 Top 100 Preseason Player Rankings List. She was one of six players to earn a spot in the starting lineup in all of Duke's 61 games last season. She posted the team's second-highest batting average of .390, while tallying career highs in runs scored (52) and RBI (20). Jennings led the team with 14 stolen bases on the year, while her 76 hits and .390 batting average ranked fourth and ninth, respectively, in the ACC. Jennings closed out the Stetson Tournament last week going 8-18 at the plate (.444). She finished with a .444 slugging percentage and a .474 on-base percentage.
Vega, SoftballAmerica's Preseason All-American, is No.15 in the organization's Top 100 Preseason Player Rankings List. Vega was a force for Blue Devil offense last year, leading the team with a .369 batting average and 20 multi-hit games. She saw action in 59-of-61 games and finished second on the team in home runs (12), doubles (18) and RBI (52). The second baseman earned NFCA All-Region honors for the second time in her career, after being named to the first team in 2024 and second team in 2023. Vega was also voted the 2024 ACC Defensive Player of the Year and named to the ACC All-Tournament team. She rounded the opening weekend last week leading the team in slugging percentage (.750), RBI (nine), on-base percentage (.526) and doubles (four).
ON DECK
The Friars will travel to Orlando, Fla. to conclude regular season tournament play at the Charge-On Classic hosted by the University of Central Florida. Providence will play in six games from Feb. 28- March 2, consisting of two games against North Florida and UCF, with single matchups against George Mason and Georgia Southern.
