Men’s Basketball Defeats URI, 90-71, at Amica Mutual Pavillion

PROVIDENCE, R.I.  - The Providence College men's basketball team defeated the University of Rhode Island Rams, 90-71, on Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, R.I.   The freshman duo Stefan Vaaks (Tabasalu, Estonia) and Jamier Jones (Sarasota, Fla.) led the Friars with 18 points each. Jones scored 14 of his career-high 18 in the second half, and finished a perfect 7-7 from the field. Jaylin Sellers (Columbus, Ga.) recorded his first double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds
"It was a good atmosphere, I thought our fans were great," Head Coach Kim English said.  "URI is one of the oldest teams in the country,and they play hard. Really impressed with Vaaks, especially, responding with a big swing after the 14-2 start."

FIRST HALF
• After URI opened the scoring, Ryan Mela (Natick, Mass.) got the Friars on the board with a hard drive to the rim. (18:37)
• URI was able to take a 14-2 lead over the next few minutes thanks to an 11-0 run. 
•  Stefan Vaaks connected on four consecutive three pointers on the Friars next four possessions to tie the game at 14 at the first media timeout. (13:24)
•  Jaylin Sellers hit a transition three to give the Friars their first lead of the game at 17-15. The Friars entered the under 12 timeout on a 15-1 run. (11:54) 
• After the Rams tied the score with a pair of free throws, Jamier Jones finished a thunderous two hand slam in traffic to regain the Friar advantage. 
Jason Edwards (Atlanta, Ga.) recorded his first points of the game after a three from the corner assisted by Jones, sparking a 7-0 Friar run, and forcing a URI timeout with the Friars leading 28-19. (8:15) 
•  The Friars were able to end an URI 8-0 run after a Sellers reverse layup. PC held a 30-29 lead into the final media timeout (3:53). 
• After URI reclaimed the lead, Vaaks stole a pass and went coast to coast for the slam to tie the game at 32. (3:03)
•  Both sides then traded baskets, with Sellers knocking down his second three-pointer to put PC in front 35-34. 
• After an Oswin Erhunmwunse (Benin City, Nigeria) offensive rebound, Vaaks connected on his career high fifth three pointer to push the Friar lead to four. (1:45)
Corey Floyd Jr. (Franklin, N.J) knocked down a corner three off a great feed from Vaaks to extend the Providence lead to 41-37 (00:56). 
• Providence led at the half, 41-37 
• Providence shot 15-29 (51.7%) from the field, 9-19 (47.4%) from three, and 2-2 (100%) from the free-throw line.   
• URI shot 13-27 (48.1%) from the field, 8-14 (57.1%) from three, and 3-5 (60%) from the free-throw line.    
• Vaaks led the Friars in the first half with 17 points on 5-9 shooting from 3. 
• Jonah Hinton led URI with nine points.  
•  Sellers contributed with 10 points for the Friars including two made threes and five rebounds.
• The Friars led the rebounding battle 16-12.
• PC had 7 steals in the half, resulting in a 12-2 advantage in points off turnovers. 

SECOND HALF: 
•  After Mela opened the second half scoring for the Friars with a pair of free throws, Corey Floyd hit a contested floater to put PC up 45-39. (18:18)
•   The Friars held a slim 49-48 lead heading into the first media timeout, with URI connecting on two three-pointers in the opening minutes of the second half. 
• A steal by Edwards led to a Sellers ally oop lop in transition, which Jones slammed home to regain the Friar advantage, 52-50. (14:09)
• Back and forth action over the next few minutes saw PC leading at the under 12 timeout, 55-53. (11:56)
• Out of the time out, three straight Friar buckets, including two by Jamier Jones, extending a 10-0 PC run that forced a URI timeout at 10:20 with the Friars up 62-53.
•  Out of a PC timeout Vaaks found Erhunmwunse for an and-one layup to give the Friars their first double-digit lead of the game (9:14). 
•  PC held the Rams scoreless for over five minutes during the 13-0 Friar scoring run.
• After Duncan Powell (Dallas, Texas) grabbed a missed URI three and found Jamier Jones on a deep outlet pass, Jones threw down a big windmill jam. The basket was the Friars' fifth consecutive made field goal, and gave PC a 13-point advantage with 8:00 to play. 
•  Powell knocked down a three on a dish from Floyd to give PC a 74-60 lead (5:32). It was Powell's first make from beyond the arc.
•  With the shot clock winding down, Edwards drained a step-back three from the logo to give PC  a 78-60 lead. (4:19)
•  Five straight PC buckets, including three from Edwards, saw the Friars extend their lead to 88-65, the largest of the game, with 2:03 to go 
•  Providence defeated URI, 90-71

HIGHLIGHTS: 
• Providence shot 31-54 (57.4%) from the field, 14-29 (48.3%) from three, and 14-19 (73.7%) from the free-throw line.   
• URI shot 25-56 (44.6%) from the field, 14-29 (48.3%) from three, and 7-14 (50.00%) from the free-throw line.     
Jamier Jones finished with a career-highs 18 points, shooting a perfect 7-7 from the floor
Stefan Vaaks ended his day with 18 points, with a career high six three pointers
Jaylin Sellers registered his first double double of the season, scoring 14 and grabbing 10 rebounds. It was his fourth career double double. 
• Vaaks finished the game with four assists and a career high three steals, both of which led the team. 
Oswin Erhunmwunse finished with six blocks, bringing his season total to 36, which leads the NCAA. He now has six games with four or more blocked shots, and is averaging 3.6 BPG
• Five players finished in double figures for the Friars: Jones (18), Vaaks (18), Sellers (14), Edwards (13), and Erhunmwunse (10)
• Providence outrebounded URI, 34-26
Stefan Vaaks had five three-pointers in the game, marking his 10th game of the season where he has recorded two or more threes. 
• The Friars have posted a 78-57 record all time vs. Rhode Island 
• The Friars have posted a 158-115 mark all-time versus teams from the A-10
• The Friars are now 647-249 all time at the Amica Mutual Pavillion
