Men’s Basketball Defeats Brown, 86-79, At The AMP

Jaylin Sellers and Jamier Jones led the Friars with 16 points each.



PROVIDENCE, R.I.  - The Providence College men's basketball team defeated the Brown University Bears, 86-79, on Tuesday, Dec. 9 at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, R.I. Graduate student guard Jaylin Sellers (Columbus, Ga.) and freshman Jamier Jones (Sarasota, Fla.) each scored 16 points for the Friars. Three other Providence players ended with double figures in scoring: graduate student Jason Edwards (Atlanta, Ga.) (12), Freshman Stefan Vaaks (Tabasalu, Estonia) (10) and sophomore Ryan Mela (Natick, Mass.) (10).  

"I think we took a couple of steps forward." Head Coach Kim English said. "We have to get back to it and get ready for a really good Butler team Saturday."   

FIRST HALF: 

• Ryan Mela opened the scoring, hitting from beyond the arc off a pass from Stefan Vaaks (18:56).   

• Brown got a bucket soon after, but Mela came right back after a spin-move in the lane lead to an open layup (17:23).  

• A Jaylin Sellers driving layup, was followed right up by a Mela steal and behind-the-back assist that led to a dunk from Corey Floyd Jr. (Franklin, N.J.) (16:31).  

• The Friars held a 9-4 lead into the first media timeout (15:29).  

• Off a Brown missed layup, Jones went coast-to-coast for a bucket and a foul (13:29).  

• Oswin Erhunmwunse (Benin City, Nigeria) rejected a shot that led to a runout for Friars ending in another made-field goal for Mela. The media timeout came soon after, with Providence leading 15-11 (11:16).  

• The Bears would tie the game at 16 before Vaaks put PC back in front with an and-one finish at the rim (8:53).  

• After a Brown made three Sellers connected from beyond-the-arc off a feed from Jason Edwards  to put the Friars in front by three at the under-eight media timeout (7:57).  

•Immediately out of the media timeout Peteris Pinnis (Salaspils, Latvia) came up with a steal, found Vaaks who connected with Edwards on a give and go alley-oop (7:48).  

• Floyd Jr. later sprinted the rock across the timeline to finish at the rim, giving PC a 31-25 lead.  

• Brown responded immediately, going on a 6-0 run forcing a Providence timeout (4:14).  

• Out of the timeout, the Friars went on a 4-0 run that included free-throws from Cole Hargrove (Norristown, Pa.) and a made layup from Edwards (3:25).  

• Edwards stayed hot knocking down a triple to put PC ahead 38-35 (2:12).  

• Providence led at the half, 42-37.  

• Providence shot 14-28 (50.0%) from the field, 4-12 (33.3%) from three, and 10-12 (83.3%) from the free-throw line.   

• Brown shot 13-32 (40.6%) from the field, 2-8 (25.0%) from three, and 9-13 (69.2%) from the free-throw line.    

• Sellers led the Friars in the first half with 11 points with two made threes. 

• Landon Lewis led all scorers for Brown with 13 points.  

• Mela and Edwards both chipped in with seven points for the Friars.  

• This is the third consecutive game that the Friars shot over 50% from the field in the first half.  

SECOND HALF: 

• Mela opened up the second half with a three pointer off an assist from Vaaks to make it 45-37, Providence (19:16).  

• A missed driving opportunity from Mela resulted in a Hargrove put back dunk to give the Friars a seven-point lead following a made three from Brown (18:08).  

• Providence held a 49-40 lead heading into the first media timeout after a pair of Edwards free throws (15:42).  

• Erhunmwunse grabbed an offensive rebound and converted on a layup to give the Friars the double-digit lead, 51-40 (14:44). 

• Back-to-back dunks from Jones gave the Friars their largest lead of the night, 55-42, forcing a Brown timeout (13:49).  

• Jones continued to get to the rim, a layup helped PC own a 57-46 lead at the under-12 timeout (11:52).  

• Powell found Edwards for a three to make the score 60-50 (10:51).  

• Mela found Hargrove in the post for a contested dunk to keep the Friars lead at 10, 62-52 (10:21).  

• Back-to-back threes from Brown pulled the Bears within four, 62-58, with just over nine minutes remaining (9:11).  

• Erhunmwunse connected on an and one opportunity on a dump down pass from Floyd Jr. to give the Friars some breathing room (8:53).   

• Erhunmwunse gathered a Floyd Jr. miss and connected on a put back layup to extend the Providence lead to nine, 67-59 (8:05). 

• Out of the timeout, Jones created a turnover and went the length of the floor finishing with a finger roll to make it 69-64, Providence (6:37). 

• A Sellers midrange jumper followed by a deep three on the next possession made it 74-66 (5:36).  

• Jones gathered an offensive rebound and converted on a put back layup to make it 76-69 (4:41).  

• Floyd Jr. found Vaaks for his first three pointer of the night to extend the Friars lead back to 10, 81-71 (2:48). 

• Sellers connected with Jones on an alley-oop dunk to make it 86-77 with under thirty seconds remaining (0:28).  

• Providence won with a final score of 86-79.  

HIGHLIGHTS: 

• Providence shot 30-65 (46.2%) from the field, 8-26 (30.8%) from three, and 18-21 (85.7%) from the free-throw line.   

• Brown shot 28-65 (43.1%) from the field, 8-21 (38.1%) from three, and 15-20 (75%) from the free-throw line.     

• Sellers and Jones led the Friars with 16 points each.  

• The Friars finished with five players in double figures for the second consecutive game: Jones (16), Sellers (16), Edwards (12), Mela (10) and Vaaks (10). 

• Through 11 games the Friars are averaging 90 points per game. 

• The Friars have posted a 98-28 mark against Brown all-time 

• PC has posted a 136-50 mark all-time versus Ivy League Opponents. 

• Providence led the entire game.  

• Providence held the 16-7 advantage in fast break points.  

• Friars are 2-0 against teams from the state of Rhode Island on the season.
