ATTLEBORO, Mass.– The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams competed in the Friar Invitational today (Sept. 6) at the Mark Coogan Course at Highland Park in Attleboro, Mass. Friar graduate student
Shannon Flockhart (Cambridge, England) won the women's race (4k) in a time of 14:13.49 and led the team to a first-place finish over three other teams. It marks the fifth-consecutive year that the Friar women's team has won the Friar Invitational. Providence senior
Michael Morgan (Sligo, Ireland) won the men's race (6k) in a time of 18:11.48, leading the Friar men's team to a first-place finish overall.
"I was very happy with the way things went today," Friar Coach
Ray Treacy said. "On the women's side Shannon and Laura dominated the race. We also got great efforts from Emily, Cara, and Niamh. We also were missing a few of our runners today. On the men's side, it was pretty much the same thing as we had a few people sitting out, but Michael continued his great running from last year and Pat had a great effort. The freshmen, Cormac and Liam, ran well. And Will had a good race. We have some people to add to the mix so we will see where we stand nationally for our next race at Wisconsin."
Led by Flockhart, the Providence women's team scored 21points and defeated Brown (56 points), New Hampshire (69 points) and Rhode Island (88 points). Other Friars who scored on the women's side were
Laura Mooney of Cappincur, Ireland (second, 14:16.23), freshman
Emily Bush of Saratoga Springs, N.Y. (fifth, 14:29.84), junior
Cara Laverty of Derry, Ireland (sixth, 14:30.93) and senior Niamh O'Mahony of Kerry, Ireland (seventh, 14:32.28).
Finishing first overall, the Providence men's team scored 18 points and defeated Brown (54 points), Rhode Island (72 points) and New Hampshire (79 points). Following Morgan for the Friars was graduate student
Pat Thygesen of Brisbane, Australia (second, 18:31.55), freshman
Cormac Dixon of Dublin, Ireland (third, 18:36.92), freshman
Liam McCay of Liverpool, England (fifth, 18:45.79) and sophomore
Will Johnston of Auckland, New Zealand (seventh, 18:53.60).
