Men’s Soccer Hosts Brown and Creighton This Week

The Friars will face Brown on Tuesday, Sept. 24 and Creighton on Saturday, Sept. 28.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College men's soccer team (5-2-1, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) will play two matches at home this week. The Friars' first game will be a non-conference match against the Brown Bears (3-2-1) on Tuesday, Sept. 24 that will stream on FloSports. Providence will have three days to prepare for its second BIG EAST game of the season when the team plays the Creighton Bluejays (4-2-2, 0-1-0 BIG EAST) on Saturday, Sept. 28. The game will be available to stream on the BIG EAST Digital Network. Both games will kick-off at 7:00 p.m. on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I.

This will be the Friars' third game this season against an Ocean-State rival. The Friars fell to Rhode Island, 1-0, at home on Sept. 9 before defeating the Bryant Bulldogs, 2-1, at Bryant on Sept. 14.

SCOUTING THE FRIARS

The Friars enter the week with a 5-2-1 overall record including a 1-0 mark in BIG EAST play. Last week, the Friars upset the No. 8 Seton Hall Pirates on Sept. 20 on Chapey Field.

Midfielder Rodrigo Vaza (Torres Vedras, Portugal) has been a pivotal figure for the Friars in the 2024 season. He has started all eight matches and is one of two Friars with a team-best two assists so far this season. Vaza scored his first goal of the 2024 campaign in the Friars' win over No. 8 Seton Hall, netting the game-winner after a give-and-go with Israel Neto (Salvador, Brazil). His shot into the far post secured the team's first victory over a ranked opponent this season. For his efforts, Vaza was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week (9/23/24), earning his first BIG EAST honor.

Graduate Lukas Burns (Cinnaminson, N.J.) recorded three saves in the Friars' victory over No. 8 Seton Hall to earn his third shutout of the season. His last-minute goal-line save against the Pirates earned him a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll (9/23/24). Earlier this year, he was nominated BIG EAST Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year. Burns currently boasts a 0.75 goals-against average and a .769 save percentage, with 20 saves across eight games.

All nine Friar goals this season have come from transfer students. Pepe Lora (Madrid, Spain), Bruno Rosa (Cascais, Portugal), Harry Scarborough (Wigan, England), Aidan Davock (Medway, Mass.), Vaza, and Kevin Castañeda (Providence, R.I.) have all recorded goals this season.

SCOUTING THE BEARS (3-2-1)

Brown enters the week with a 3-2-1 overall record. The Bears finished with two wins last week after defeating Boston University, 5-1, on Sept. 17 and Stonehill, 5-3, on Sept. 21.

Sophomore Lorenzo Amaral leads the Bear offense with 11 points on four goals and three assists. Amaral tallied nine of his points last week following two goals and one assist against the Terriers and two assists and one goal versus the Skyhawks.

Henrik Weiper has started all six games in goal for the Bears. Weiper currently holds a 1.33 goals against average, a 0.781 save percentage and seven goals against across all games.

SCOUTING THE BLUEJAYS (4-2-2, 0-1-0 BIG EAST)

Creighton enters the week with a 4-2-2 overall record including an 0-1-0 mark in BIG EAST action. In the Bluejays last game, the squad was defeated by Georgetown in their BIG EAST Opener.

Jackson Castro and Miguel Arilla lead the Bluejay charge with nine and seven points, respectively. Earlier this year, Castro was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team after leading the Bluejays with six assists while adding a pair of goals.

Blake Gillingham has played all eight games for Creighton. Gillingham has conceded 10 and holds a 1.25 goals against average and a 0.667 save percentage.
 

UP NEXT…

The Friars will travel to Washington, D.C. to play the Georgetown Hoyas (3-2-3, 1-0 BIG EAST) on Friday, Oct. 4 The match is slated for 3:00 p.m. and will stream on the BIG EAST Digital Network.

The Hoyas hold a 17-12-3 all-time series edge over the Friars. The last time the two teams met was last season when the Friars upset the No. 5 Hoyas, 1-0, on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
