Men’s Soccer Upsets No. 8 Seton Hall, 1-0, In BIG EAST Home Opener

Rodrigo Vaza scored the game-winner to give the Friars their first win over a ranked opponent this season.


PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College men's soccer team upset the No. 8 Seton Hall Pirates (6-1, 0-1 BIG EAST), 1-0, in the team's BIG EAST opener on Friday, Sept. 20 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I. The Friars improved to a 5-2-1 overall record including a 1-0-0 mark in BIG EAST play. Graduate student Rodrigo Vaza (Torres Vedras, Portugal) scored his first goal of the 2024 campaign to deliver the Pirates their first loss of the season. Lukas Burns (Cinnaminson, N.J.) tallied his third shutout of the year.

GAME FLOW & NOTES
-The Friars took the lead in the 21st minute when Vaza weaved through the defense, played a quick one-two with Israel Neto (Salvador, Brazil) then slotted the ball past the goalkeeper.
-The Pirates almost leveled the score late in the second half after Sam Bjork's shot sailed just wide of the goal.
- Diego Batista (Barcelos, Portugal) took a free-kick that was tipped by Seton Hall's goalkeeper, Matias Molina, onto the crossbar and deflected downward. Upon review, it was determined that the ball had not crossed the goal line and the score remained at 1-0 in favor of the Friars.
- With 19 minutes left to play, Lukas Burns (Cinnaminson, N.J.) made a goal-line save off a Pirate header.
- Seton Hall was awarded a penalty kick with six minutes remaining but Virgil Dall'Agnol sent his shot high over the crossbar and the score remained 1-0.
-The Friars are now 1-0 against ranked teams this season. The last time the Friars upset a ranked team was last season when they defeated the No. 5 Georgetown Hoyas, 1-0, on Chapey Field.

The Bears hold a 18-10-9 all-time series edge over the Friars. The last matchup between Brown and Providence ended in a 1-1 draw last season. The Friars' most recent home victory over the Bears was in 2019, with a 1-0 win.
