Ella McBride and Kayla Briggs Qualify For Under-20 FIFA World Cup 2024
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence College women's soccer junior, Ella McBride (Peterborough, Canada) and sophomore Kayla Briggs (Toronto, Canada) have qualified for the Under-20 FIFA World Cup 2024 with Canada Soccer's Under-20 Women's National Team today (Aug. 19).
McBride wrapped up her second season with the Friars last fall. She played in 20 games for the Friars, including 17 appearances in the starting lineup. McBride tallied 1,541 minutes at forward with two points on one goal.
Briggs finished her first season with the Friars last fall. She played in 14 games for the Friars, including 13 appearances in the starting lineup. Briggs tallied 999 minutes at forward and scored her first collegiate goal against Brown University (Aug. 31) she finished with nine points on two goals and five assists. Briggs earned a spot twice on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll (Aug. 21, Sept. 4), was selected BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week (Oct. 16) and earned All-BIG EAST Second Team honors. Briggs received preseason recognition as a member of the Preseason ALL-BIG EAST Team (Aug. 13).
The 2024 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup™ will take place in Colombia, from August 31 to September 22. Under the leadership of Head Coach Cindy Tye, the team will gather in Bogotá, Colombia for a preparation camp from August 22-26 before traveling to Medellín on August 27 ahead of Canada's opening match of the tournament.
Drawn into Group B, Canada will face France, Brazil, and Fiji. The team will begin their group-stage journey against France on Saturday, August 31, followed by matches against Fiji on Tuesday, September 3, and Brazil on Thursday, September 6. The top two teams from each group will advance to the round of 16, along with the four best third-placed teams. The tournament will then progress through the quarterfinals, semifinals, a third-place match, and conclude with the final on September 22 in Bogotá, the nation's capital.
