The Friars finished the year ranked No. 16 in the nation.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) named its Top Programs for 2023-24 on June 11. The USTFCCCA Program of the Year Award honors the institutions that have achieved the most success in each academic year (spanning the cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field seasons) based on the institution's finish at the NCAA Championships. The Providence College women's cross country and track teams registered 76.5 points and finished the year ranked No. 16th in the nation. The Friars were one of only two BIG EAST teams ranked in the top 22.
In order to be eligible for the award, teams must qualify for each of the NCAA Championships. Scoring is based on the team's finish at each NCAA Championship in cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field (i.e. 1st = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points … 31st = 31 points) with the lowest total score for all three championships combined determining the award winner. Ties among schools split points for positions taken.
The Friar women's teams placed 28th at the NCAA Cross Country Championship, 23rd at the NCAA Indoor Track Championship and 25th at the NCAA Outdoor Track Championship. At the NCAA Cross Country Championship, the Friars were led by senior Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England), who was the team's top finisher (69th – 20:28.5). At the NCAA Indoor Track Championships, the Friars' Distance Medley Relay Team of Flockhart, sophomore Jill Fenerty (Franklin, Mass.), graduate Alex O'Neill (Ennis, Ireland) and junior Kimberley May (Auckland, New Zealand) placed sixth in a time of 10:57.34. Also at the NCAA Indoor Championship, May (third – 4:27.14) and Flockhart (10th – 4:36.73) ran strong races for the Friars. During the NCAA Outdoor Championship, May and Flockhart both scored points for the Friars in the 1,500 meter finals. May placed second (4:08.07) and Flockhart was sixth (4:09.53).
May and Flockhart led the way as each earned three All-America accolades spanning the indoor and outdoor seasons.
