Women's Basketball Earns 60-53 Win Over Delaware

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Delaware, 60-53, on Nov. 24 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. Grace Efosa scored a game-high 14 points and paced the Friars in scoring for a fifth-straight game. Providence improved to 3-3 overall, while Delaware dropped to 1-4 on the season.
1ST QUARTER:
• The Friars got out to a slow start during the opening five minutes of play. The team hit just 1-7 attempts from the field and committed five turnovers. Delaware mounted an 8-2 lead at the first media timeout (4:42).
• Efosa converted an and-1 out of the timeout to make it an 8-5 game, but the Blue Hens responded with a 6-0 run (14-5).
• The Friars cut the deficit to three at the break with an 8-2 scoring run to close out the quarter (16-13).
2ND QUARTER:
• Delaware held a 25-20 lead at the second quarter media (4:50).
• The Friars used an 11-0 scoring run to take their first lead of the game (28-25) with 55-seconds left on the clock. Five different players contributed to the run, which was capped off by a Marta Morales Romero three pointer.
• Providence's defense forced six Blue Hen turnovers during the run and held Delaware scoreless during the final 5:55 of the half.
• Efosa led the Friars with seven points on 3-4 shooting in the first half, while Olivia Olsen grabbed a team-high six boards to go along with five points and two steals.
3RD QUARTER:
• Providence extended its run to 15-0 after beginning the third quarter with back-to-back buckets (32-25).
• Providence got out to a seven-point lead with 4:00 minutes on the clock (41-34), marking its largest lead through the first three quarters.
• Delaware closed the third quarter with three-unanswered points from the foul line to get within three at the break (44-41).
4TH QUARTER:
• Providence started the fourth quarter on 9-0 run to extend its lead into double-digits (53-41), forcing a Delaware timeout.
• The Blue Hens responded with a 7-0 run to get within five (53-48).
• Morales Romero halted the run with a three from the top of the key with 2:47 left (56-48).
• Providence got the lead back out to double digits with less than a minute left and won the team 60-53.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Efosa paced the Friars with a game-high 14 points on 6-9 shooting from the field.
• Efosa has led Providence in scoring during each of the last five games.
• Grad transfer MacKayla Scarlett scored a season-high 11 points. She was 4-10 from the field, including 3-7 from beyond the arc.
• Olsen, who was honored pregame for reaching the 1,000-point career milestone, finished the day with seven points and a game-high nine rebounds. She also added two assists, two steals and two blocked shots.
• Morales Romero was 3-4 from three-point territory in the game and finished with nine points and five rebounds.
• As a team, the Friars shot 45.3-percent from the field (24-53), while holding Delaware to 36.7-percent from the floor (18-49).
• The Providence bench outscored Delaware's bench, 27-15.
WHAT'S NEXT:
• Providence heads to Cancun, Mexico for three games as part of the Cancun Challenge. The Friars will face VCU in the tournament opener on Thursday, Nov. 28 at 11:00 a.m. (ET). Providence will also play Wisconsin (Nov. 29) and San Diego State (Nov. 30). Both games will tipoff at 11:00 a.m. (ET).
