PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's hockey team is set to host Vermont for two games this weekend at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. The first game will be played on Friday, Nov. 15, at 12:00 p.m., followed by a second contest on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 2:00 p.m.
Scouting the Friars
Providence enters the series with a 6-6-0 overall record and a 3-5-0 mark in Hockey East play. The Friars are currently receiving four votes in the USCHO poll.
Last weekend, the Friars split a series with the University of New Hampshire. In Friday's game on Nov. 8 at the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H., the Wildcats claimed a 7-3 victory.
Taya Currie (Parkhill, Ontario) made her first collegiate Hockey East start for PC, while
Olivia Klunowski (Toronto, Ontario) came in relief and finished with 13 saves.
Audrey Knapp (Stevens Point, Wis.) and
Reichen Kirchmair (Oakville, Ontario) each scored, becoming the first two Friars to hit double digits in points this season.
In the rematch on Saturday, Nov. 9, at Schneider Arena in Providence, the Friars bounced back with a 6-3 win, powered by
Millie Sirum's (Oslo, Norway) first career hat-trick. This marked the second hat trick for the Friars this season, with
Kiara Kraft (Churchville, N.Y.) having achieved the first in the season opener against Saint Michael's. Knapp scored again, tying the game at 3-3 and increasing her team-leading goal tally to seven. This was also her third consecutive game with a goal. Kirchmair and
Hannah Johnson (Readfield, Maine) each recorded three points in the contest. Kirchmair now leads the Friars with 13 points, while Johnson's three assists set a new career-high in both assists and points in a single game.
Goals to Start the Season
Providence scored six-or-more goals in both games against Saint Michael's to start the season. The last time the Friars recorded six-or-more goals in back-to-back games was Sep. 29, 2017 (at Union, 7-3) and Oct. 1, 2017 (vs. Vermont, 6-2).
Returning for the Friars

Audrey Knapp (Stevens Point, Wis.) who made the Hockey East Pro Ambitions All-Rookie Team after recording 14 goals and four assists for 18 points in her freshman season.
Reichen Kirchmair (Oakville, Ontario) also returns to the lineup. Kirchmair posted 11 goals and five assists for 16 points last season.
Providence returns top defensemen
Brooke Becker (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and
Cristina Cavaliere (Mississauga, Ontario). Becker totaled five goals, 11 assists and 25 blocks and was named All-Hockey East Third Team honors. Cavaliere recorded one goal, 11 assists and 30 blocked shots.
In net,
Hope Walinski (Lincoln, R.I.) returns for Providence. Walinski started 26 games last season, posting a 2.04 goals against average, a .917 save percentage, four shutouts and 11-11-4 record. Sophomore
Taya Currie (Parkhill, Ontario) returns after missing the entire 2023-24 season due to injury. In 2021, Currie was picked in the 14th round of the 2021 OHL draft by the Sarnia Sting, marking the first time a female player had been selected to one of the world's top junior hockey leagues.
Hockey East Preseason Poll
The Friars were picked to finish fifth in the Hockey East Preseason Poll, which was released on Monday, Sept. 16. Providence received 55 points and was picked to finish behind UConn (88), Northeastern (81), Boston College (73) and New Hampshire (62). The Huskies, who won the 2024 Hockey East Tournament, received eight first place votes.

Providence welcomes eight new players (three transfers and five freshmen) to the roster for the 2024-25 season.
Millie Sirum (Oslo, Norway) is a graduate student from Holy Cross.
Sarah Davies (Mississauga, Ont.) is a junior from Lindenwood University and

Friars Under Head Coach Matt Kelly
Including the 2024-25 campaign,
Matt Kelly has posted an overall record of 111-81-22 (.570) and 83-50-17 (.572) in Hockey East play. In his inaugural season, the 2018-19 Friars tied the school-record with 24 wins. In 2020-21, Kelly led the Friars to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005, marking the program's second appearance in school history. The Friars have reached the Hockey East Championship twice under Kelly, in 2020-21 and 2022-23.
Following their 3-2 overtime win against the University of Maine on Friday, Oct. 11, the Friars are now 6-1-0 in Hockey East openers under Coach Kelly. In those matchups, Providence has outscored its opponents 25-9.

In the Kelly era, the Friars are 77-5-4 when taking the lead into the third period. They are 22-18-11 when tied after two periods and 12-58-7 when trailing.
Scouting the Catamounts
Vermont enters Friday's game with a 3-8-0 overall record, including a 2-5-0 mark in Hockey East play. Last weekend, the Catamounts hosted Holy Cross for a single game, falling 2-1 in overtime. The teams remained scoreless for the first 40 minutes, but Ashley Kokavec opened the scoring for Vermont early in the third period. Holy Cross responded three minutes later and eventually secured the winner in overtime. The Catamounts limited the Crusaders to 15 shots, the fewest they have allowed in a game this season.
Who to Watch
Junior Lara Beecher leads the Catamounts in scoring with seven points (three goals, four assists). Defensively, sophomore Ashley Kokavec has six points (two goals, four assists) through 11 games. Over the last five games she has registered five points.
In goal, senior Jane Gervais has started eight games, posting a 3-5-0 record with a 3.20 goals-against average and a .898 save percentage. She also recorded a shutout in a 1-0 win over No. 7 St. Lawrence on Oct. 18. Redshirt sophomore Ellie Simmons has also seen time between the pipes, starting three games with a 0-2-0 record, 2.32 GAA, and an .853 save percentage.
All-Time Series with the Catamounts
Providence leads the all-time series against Vermont 40-23-5. The teams met three times last season, with the Friars sweeping a weekend series in Burlington, winning 6-0 on Jan. 12 and 4-3 on Jan. 13. The teams played to a 2-2 tie on Feb. 10 at Schneider Arena, with Vermont winning the shootout 1-0. Vermont's last win in the series came on Jan. 13, 2022, with a 3-0 victory.
