LEESBURG, Va.– The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams competed in the BIG EAST Championship on Friday, November 1 at Marven Park in Leesburg, Va.. The 12th-ranked Friar women's team placed second of 11 teams and was led by graduate student Alex Millard (Kent, England), who finished second (19:50.7) of 99 runners.  On the men's side, the Friars placed fourth of nine teams.  Senior Michael Morgan (Sligo, Ireland) paced the Friars, finishing seventh (24:02.66) of 85 runners.

"I am very happy with both teams today," Head Coach Ray Treacy said.  "It's heartbreaking, obviously, for the women to lose the title by one point, but they ran fantastic. Getting closer and closer to Georgetown as the season goes along. We're really looking forward to the rest of the season. And the guys had the best race of the season, by far. It was fantastic to see them running to their potential today. And I think we're going to get better again over the next couple of weeks, so I'm very excited."

The Friar women's squad finished second with 43 points, which was one point behind Georgetown.  After Millard, leading the way for the women was senior Kimberley May (Auckland, New Zealand), graduate student  Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England) and senior Laura Mooney (Cappincur, Ireland).  Millard, May, Flockhart and Mooney all finished in the top 10.  May was sixth (20:00.7), Flockhart was eighth (20:13.9) and Mooney was 10th (20:40.0).  Senior Niamh O'Mahony (Kerry, Ireland) was the final Friar to score as she placed 18th (20:58.3).

The Friar men's team scored 95 points and finished behind Villanova (35 points), Butler (41 points) and Georgetown (70 points).  Pacing the Friars after Morgan was graduate student Pat Thygesen (Brisbane, Australia), freshman Cormac Dixon (Dublin, Ireland), junior Luke Coffin (Annapolis, Md.) and graduate student Liam Back (New Plymouth, England) -- Thygesen was 15th (24:26.30), Dixon was 16th (24:26.71), Coffin was 25th (25:09.53) and Back was 32nd (25:29.43).
