PROVIDENCE, R.I. – On October 8, the Friar Athletic Department hosted the Joe Canavan '65 Memorial Tournament presented by Finetco which took place at Point Judith Country Club in Narragansett, R.I.
The tournament, which celebrates the legacy of Joe Canavan '65, raised more than $67,000. These proceeds will directly support the Providence College Canavan Sports Medicine Fund, ensuring top-tier treatment for more than 300 student-athletes annually.
Highlights of the day included an exciting round of golf, a post-tournament lunch courtesy of Dr. Peter Evangelista and Rhode Island Medical Imaging. Golfers also had the opportunity to share stories with the Canavan Family, including Joe's beloved wife MaryBeth, and children Jeff, Karen and Traci '89.
"On behalf of Providence College Athletics, I want to thank MaryBeth, the entire Canavan Family, The Finnegan Family, Finetco, Rhode Island Medical Imaging, and Pt. Judith Country Club." Athletic Director Steve Napolillo said. "Our top priority is the health and well-being of our student-athletes. We are deeply grateful for Joe's enduring legacy, which lives on through every student-athlete receiving care and support at the Canavan Sports Medicine Center."
"Almost 20 years ago, I was introduced to Joe and MaryBeth Canavan, and we immediately made a connection," Sr. Associate Athletic Director of Health and Wellness John Rock said. "Through the years, our relationship has grown to include the entire Canavan Family. What we have accomplished for the physical and mental wellbeing of our student athletes, due to the generosity of Joe and MaryBeth has been profound. From the state-of-the-art sports medicine facility to the implementation of programs in the areas of mental health and wellness. None of this would be possible without them, they have left an indelible mark on the lives of thousands of student-athletes at PC."
