PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The No. 23/23 Providence College men's basketball team was defeated by the Creighton University Bluejays (11-4,2-2 BIG EAST), 69-60, on Saturday, Jan. 6 at the CHI Health Center Omaha in Omaha, Neb. The Friars fell to11-4 overall and 2-2 in BIG EAST play. Junior Devin Carter (Miami, Fla.) led the way with a double-double, tying a career-high 25 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and adding three assists. It was his fifth double-double of the season and his second of the week.
"I thought our guys battled, showed great resolve." Head Coach Kim English said. "We will watch it on film, learn from it and get ready for Wednesday."
FIRST HALF:
• With Bryce Hopkins (Oak Park, Ill.) out for the rest of the season with a torn ACL, redshirt sophomore Corey Floyd, Jr. (Franklin, N.J.), registered his second start of the season and his career.
• Devin Carter opened the Friars' scoring with a driving layup. Jayden Pierre (Elizabeth, N.J.) followed with a three from the top of the key. At the first media timeout (14:03 mark), Providence trailed, 14-9.
•The Bluejays kept the lead heading into the 12-under media timeout (11:59 mark), 16-12. Coming out of the timeout, Ticket Gaines (Buffalo, N.Y.) sunk a three to put the score within one point, 16-15. With 10:56 on the clock, Carter followed with another three to give the Providence its first lead of the game, 18-16.
• Creighton quickly countered with a 7-0 scoring run to regain the lead, 23-18. At the 7:53 mark, Gaines scored a three-point jumper to end the Providence scoring drought. With the bucket, Gaines became the first Friar to enter the double-digit scoring column.
• Castro scored his first career three with 7:08 on the clock, 25-24.
• Creighton continued to extend its lead with an 8-0 scoring run towards the end of the half. Entering the locker room, the Friars trailed, 37-30.
•Providence shot 12-28 (42.86%) from the field, 5-10 (50.0%) from three and 1-4 (25.0%) from the free throw line.
•Creighton shot 16-33 (48.48%) from the field, 3-13 (23.08%) from three and 2-2 (100.0%) from the free throw line.
SECOND HALF:
• The Friars failed to score during the three minutes of the second half, being outscored 9-0 by the Bluejays. At the first media timeout (16:53 mark), the Friars trailed, 46-30.
• Josh Oduro (Gainesville, Va.) started the second half scoring for the Friars with a textbook jumper in the paint. Spearheaded by Oduro, the Friars went on an 8-2 scoring run over 2:29 minute span shooting 4-5 in field goals. At the 12-under media timeout (11:57 mark), the Friars trailed, 50-39.
• Over the first 13 minutes of the second half, the Friars improved from and 0-6 shooting percentage to a 6-12 shot margin. Meanwhile, Creighton started the half shooting 4-6 at the 8-under media timeout, the Bluejays had only shot 2-11.
• The Friars continued their hot streak, outscoring the Bluejays,17-6. With 4:17 left to play, Carter drained a three from deep to put the game within one point, 56-55. Entering the final media timeout (3:10 mark), Creighton led, 59-55.
•Creighton remained out of reach for the Friars extending its lead to nine points with 12 seconds left, 69-60.
NOTES/HIGHLIGHTS:
•Providence finished 24-65 (36.92%) from the field, 8-23 (34.78%) from three and 4-8 (50.0%) from the free throw line.
•Creighton finished 26-54 (48.15%) from the field, 7-23 (30.43%) from three and 10-14 (71.43%) from the free throw line.
•Three players finished in double figures for the Friars, Carter (25), Gaines (12) and Pierre (10). Three players finished in double figures for the Bluejays.
•Providence outscored Creighton 20-11 in points off turnovers.
•The Friars are ranked No. 23 in the AP Poll (Jan. 1) and No. 23 in the Coaches Poll (Jan. 2).
• Providence leads Creighton 19-15 all-time.
• The last time Carter marked 25 points in a game was on Feb. 14, 2023 against Creighton.
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will travel to New York City, N.Y. on Wednesday, Jan.10 to play St. John's in a BIG EAST matchup at the Madison Square Garden. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on FS1.
• The all-time series record between the two teams sits at 65-57 with Providence trailing. The last road victory for the Friars against the Red Storm was on Feb.19, 2019, with a score of 70-56.
