Devin Carter scored a career-high 31 points and recorded his third consecutive double-double.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team was defeated by the St. John's Red Storm (12-4, 4-1 BIG EAST), 75-73, on Wednesday, Jan. 10 at the Madison Square Garden in New York, N.Y. The Friars fell to a 11-5 overall and 2-3 in BIG EAST play. Junior Devin Carter (Miami, Fla.) led the way with a career-high 31 points. He also tied his career high for rebounds with 13 and he added four steals. It marks his third consecutive double-double and sixth on the season.
"It's a growth mindset" Head Coach Kim English said. "We had plenty of opportunities in this game that we will learn from."
FIRST HALF:
•Jayden Pierre (Elizabeth, N.J.) started the scoring for the Friars with a pullup jumper. In the subsequent possession, Ticket Gaines (Buffalo, N.Y.) flushed a three from the top of the key.
•At the first media timeout (14:29 mark), the Friars trailed, 13-5.
•While Providence endured a 3:10 scoring drought, the Johnnies were able to extend their lead with a 10-0 run over a 2:50 minute span. With 13:32 on the clock, the Friars trailed 20-5. Carter ended the Friars' scoring drought with a made free throw at the 12:26 minute mark.
•At the under-12 media timeout (11:58 mark), Providence trailed, 20-6.
•Following the timeout, Providence answered with an 8-0 scoring drive while forcing the Red Storm to remain scoreless for 2:47 minutes. With 10:23 left in the half, Carter converted off a steal with an empathetic dunk to put the score within seven, 20-13.
• In the final minute of the half, Pierre was able to flush two consecutive threes from deep to close the scoring for the half. Entering the locker room, Providence trailed 40-29.
•With 12 points, Pierre was the lone Friar to enter the double-digit scoring in the first half.
•Providence shot 11-26 (42.3%) from the field, 3-11 (27.3%) from three and 4-9 (44.4%) from the free throw line.
•St. John's shot 17-30 (56.7%) from the field, 5-11 (45.5%) from three and 1-2 (50.0%) from the free throw line.
SECOND HALF:
•Carter opened the Friars' scoring with back-to-back layups forcing a Red Storm timeout. At the 18:07 mark, the Friars trailed 42-33.
•Led by Carter, Providence outscored the Johnnies 10-0 in the first three minutes of the game. With 16:40 on the clock, St. John's second half shooting sat at 0-3 while Providence shot 4-6. By the first media timeout (15:48 mark) the Friars had closed the gap to three, 44-41.
•At the 14:30 minute mark, Carter finished with a layup following a St. John's turnover to give Providence its first lead of the game, 45-44.
•The Red Storm was able to regain the lead by the under-12 media timeout. At the 11:36 minute mark, St. John's led, 50-47.
•The Johnnies continued to extend their lead with a 9-0 scoring run to force a Providence timeout with 9:24 on the clock, 57-47.
•Providence regained momentum around the seven-minute mark shooting 3-3. With 6:07 left to play, Pierre flushed a three to trigger a St. John's timeout. Friars trailed, 63-55.
•At the 0:23 mark, Carter drained three free-throws to put the game within three, 74-71. Rafael Castro (Dover, N.J.) won a jump-ball possession to give the Friars the ball with 0:22 seconds left to play.
•Carter scored a quick layup with nine seconds left. Providence trailed by one, 74-73.
•The Friars were unable to convert for the remainder of the game. St. John's scored a second-chance free throw to close the scoring of the game, 75-73.
NOTES/HIGHLIGHTS:
•Providence finished 27-61 (43.3%) from the field, 8-23 (34.8%) from three and 11-21 (52.4%) from the free throw line.
•St. John's finished 26-54 (48.1%) from the field, 7-18 (38.9%) from three and 16-25 (64.0%) from the free throw line.
•Three players finished in double figures for the Friars, Carter (31), Pierre (17) and Gaines (11). Three players finished in double figures for the Johnnies.
• Carter scored a career-high 31 points
• Pierre registered a career-high 17 points.
•Providence outscored St. John's in fast break points (15-5), points in the paint (34-22), points off turnovers (19-15) and points off rebounds (13-10).
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will host the Xavier University Musketeers in a BIG EAST matchup on Saturday, Jan.13 at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. on FS1.
• The all-time series record between the two teams sits at 13-11 with Providence trailing. Providence has won 8-3 games at home against the Musketeers.
