Georgetown Nets Game Winner With Four-Seconds Left To Defeat Friars, 73-71

Grace Efosa paced four Friars in double-figures with 19 points.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Georgetown, 73-71, on Jan. 17 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The Friars dropped to 8-11 on the year (2-4 BIG EAST), while Georgetown improved to 13-4 (3-3 BIG EAST).
1ST QUARTER:
• Georgetown held a 13-12 lead at the first media timeout. Both teams were red-hot from the field during the opening stretch. Providence shot 63-percent (5-8), while Georgetown checked in at 55-percent (6-11).
• The Friars went on an 8-0 run over the next 4:16 to take a 20-13 lead.
• The Hoyas got back on the scoreboard with two seconds left to make it a 20-15 game at the intermission.
• Brynn Farrell was 2-2 from beyond the arc led all scorers with six points in the opening 10 minutes.
2ND QUARTER:
• Providence mounted a nine-point lead with 6:46 remaining in the quarter and went to the media timeout up 31-23 (4:55).
• Grace Efosa sparked the offense in the first five minutes of the frame with five points on 2-2 shooting. She also grabbed three boards and dished two assists.
• The Hoyas used a 15-2 scoring spurt to take a 38-33 lead with 26-seconds left in the quarter.
• Efosa ended a scoring drought of 3:42 with a baseline jumper as time expired, giving her a team-high 13 points.
• The Friars trailed 38-35 at halftime, with both teams shooting just north of 50-percent from the field.
3RD QUARTER:
• Georgetown hit the first bucket of the third, but the Friars answered with a 6-0 run to regain the lead (41-40) with 6:29 on the clock.
• Providence took a 47-43 lead with the help of a 6-0 run (3:36).
• The Friars led 46-49 with 1:38 remaining on the clock, but Georgetown finished the quarter with four unanswered points to take a 50-49 advantage into the final frame.
4TH QUARTER:
• Providence trailed 62-59 with 5:51 on the clock.
• The Friars used a 7-2 spurt to take a 66-64 lead with 2:17 to play.
• Kelsey Ransom drained a pair of free throws with 54-seconds left to put the Hoyas up 68-66.
• The Friars committed a foul on the offensive end crashing the glass and sent Georgetown to the line, where Victoria Rivera made it a four-point game (70-66) with 44.9 left on the clock.
• Grace Efosa cut the deficit to 70-68 and had a chance to make it a one-point game at the foul line, but missed the attempt with 33.5 seconds left.
• Georgetown went to the line once again, but this time made just one of two attempts for a 71-68 lead.
• The Friars grabbed the defensive board and Marta Morales Romero tied the game, 71-71, with a triple from the top of the key.
• Ransom got to the rim for the go-ahead bucket with 4-seconds remaining but missed the ensuing free throw after being fouled on the play.
• Providence grabbed the defensive rebound and attempted to go the length of the floor for a final shot, but were unable to get the bucket.
NOTES:
• Efosa paced four Friars in double figures with 19 points. She was 9-11 from the field and recorded five rebounds, two assists and one steal in 38 minutes of action.
• Olivia Olsen finished the night with 17 points, nine rebounds, two assists and six blocked shots.
• Farrell tallied 14 points on 4-5 shooting from the field, including a 4-4 performance from three-point territory.
• Morales Romero rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 points and added a career-high seven assists.
• Providence shot 55.1-percent from the field in the game (27-49), including a season-best 66.7-percent from beyond the arc (8-12). The Friars also converted 75-percent of their free throws (9-12).
• Providence and Georgetown entered the game as the top-two rebounding teams in the conference during BIG EAST play. The Friars finished the game with a 33-22 advantage on the glass.
• Georgetown outscored the Friars 23-11 in points off turnovers. Providence committed 17 turnovers in the game, while the Hoyas turned the ball over just seven times.
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 21 against Butler. The game will be played at Hinkle Fieldhouse and is scheduled to tip-off at Noon on FS1.
