The 1994 Friar men's basketball squad was the first PC men's basketball team to capture a BIG EAST title. Head Coach Rick Barnes' squad finished the season with a 20-10 mark overall and a 10-8 record in BIG EAST play. However, it was the BIG EAST Tournament at Madison Square Garden where the team shined. The Friars opened the tournament with a 77-66 win over Villanova on March 11. On March 12, Providence defeated No. 2/2 UConn and earned a 69-67 win. In the title game, the Friars defeated Georgetown, 74-64, on March 13. The Friars earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament where the squad was defeated in the First Round by Alabama, 76-70, on March 17. The Friars were led by Eric Williams (15.7 ppg), Michael Smith (12.9 ppg), Franklin Western (12.8 ppg), Dickey Simpkins (11.8 ppg), Michael Brown (10.6 ppg) and Rob Phelps (7.6 ppg).
The 1999 Friar baseball squad captured the BIG EAST Tournament title in the team's final year of existence. Led by Head Coach Charley Hickey, the Friars finished 49-16 overall and 18-8 in BIG EAST action. Providence entered the league tournament as a No. 3 seed. The Friars posted a 3-1 mark in the double-elimination tournament before registering a 6-1 win over St. John's in the championship game. The Friars advanced to the NCAA Tournament in Tallahassee, Fla. as the No. 2 seed behind host Florida State. PC lost to Jacksonville in the tournament opener. The Friars earned a rematch with Jacksonville by beating The Citadel, but things looked bleak in game 2 with Jacksonville when PC trailed 7-1 after 5 1/2 innings. That's when the Friars rallied to tie the game 7-7, fell behind when Jacksonville scored in the top of the ninth, then tied it again to send the game to extra innings. Finally in the 10th, Neal McCarthy hit a two-out solo homer to keep the Friars alive and help the Friars capture the extra inning win. Unfortunately, the Friars were eliminated by Florida State in the next game, 14-3, bringing the season to a close.
