PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball program released its 2023-24 non-conference schedule today [Aug. 22].
QUICK HITS:
• The non-conference schedule consists of one exhibition game and 13 regular-season games.
• The Friars will face four non-conference teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2022-23, and two others that earned an invitation to the WNIT.
• Providence will host an exhibition game at home (Alumni Hall), in addition to seven regular-season non-conference games.
• Providence will face HBCU member Hampton for its season opener on Nov. 7. The Friars have played six HBCU's in the program's 49-year history, with Providence's last meeting vs. an HBCU dating back to November 21, 2017 vs. Savannah State University.
• The Friars will play two games as part of the 2023 West Palm Classic in West Palm Beach, Fla. Providence's opponents for the tournament will be released at a later date.
• Providence will face intrastate rivals Brown and Rhode Island during the upcoming season.
• The Friars will embark on their 50
th season of varsity basketball in 2023-24.
• First-year Head Coach Erin Batth takes over the reins at Providence College as the program's 11
th coach all-time. She has 17 years of NCAA Division I coaching experience and spent the 2022-23 season as an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at Michigan. Batth also is the first Black female head coach in Friar women's basketball history.
• The BIG EAST Conference schedule will be released in September.
2023-24 PROVIDENCE COLLEGE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SCHEDULE
IN DEPTH LOOK AT THE NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE:
The Friars will host New Haven in an exhibition game on Nov. 1 before officially tipping off the season against Hampton at Alumni Hall on Nov. 7. Hampton, which is one of the Nation's many Historical Black College's and Universities, finished the 2022-23 season with a 12-18 overall record, including a 9-10 mark in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA). Providence has played six HBCU's during the program's 49-year history, with the most recent match-up dating back to Nov. 21, 2017 vs. Savannah State.
The Friars remain home at Alumni Hall for three of their next four games, beginning with Vermont on Nov. 10. The Catamounts won the America East regular-season and tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Vermont finished the year with a 25-7 overall record, including a 14-2 mark in the America East.
Providence makes the short trip across the city to face Brown at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Nov. 15, and follows with home games against Boston College (Nov. 19) and Monmouth (Nov. 22).
Brown posted an 11-15 record last season (4-10 Ivy League). Boston College completed the year with a 16-17 mark (5-13 ACC), while Monmouth (18-16, 9-9 CAA) claimed the Coastal Athletic Association Tournament Title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
Providence hits the road for back-to-back games against Penn State and Columbia to close out the month of November. The Friars will face the Nittany Lions at the Bryce Jordan Center on Nov. 26. PSU posted a 14-17 overall record in 2022-23, including a 4-14 mark in the Big Ten. Eleven of Penn State's 14 wins came on its home court.
The Friars remain on the road to face Columbia at Levien Gymnasium in New York City on Nov. 29. The Lions finished the season with a 28-6 overall record (12-2 Ivy League) and made an impressive run to the championship game of the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT), where they fell to Kansas, 66-59.
Providence opens the month of December with back-to-back home games against Iona (Dec. 2) and Rhode Island (Dec. 6). The Gaels won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) regular-season and tournament titles and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Iona compiled a 26-7 overall record, including an 18-2 mark in the MAAC.
The Rams finished second in the Atlantic 10 last season and completed the year with a 26-7 overall mark (14-2 A10). URI earned an invitation to the WNIT and advanced to the Round of 16. This year's match-up will mark the 54
th meeting all-time between the two intrastate rivals, with Providence leading the all-time series, 39-14.
On Dec. 9, the Friars will travel to New Haven, Conn. to face Yale at the John J. Lee Amphitheater. The Bulldogs posted a 13-14 mark a year ago, including a 7-7 record in the Ivy League.
Sacred Heart comes to Alumni Hall on Dec. 16, fresh off its run to the 2023 Northeast Conference Tournament Title. The Pioneers (19-14, 12-4 NEC) defeated Southern in the NCAA First Four before bowing out of the postseason against top-seeded Stanford in the NCAA First Round.
Providence closes out non-conference play at the 2023 West Palm Classic on Dec. 20-21. The tournament will be held at Keiser University in West Palm Beach, Fla. The tournament will consist of two games and the Friars' opponents will be released at a later date.
