Women's Basketball Defeated By Howard In Season Opener, 68-56

Sabou Gueye led the Friars with 16 points and Payton Dunbar added 12 points.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated by MEAC preseason favorite Howard, 68-56, in the 2025-26 season opener on Nov. 4 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The Friars start the season 0-1, while Howard moved to 1-0. 
 
1ST QUARTER:
• The Friars got out to an 8-2 lead through the opening four minutes of play.
• Howard cut the deficit to two (9-7) with a 6-2 spurt.
• Providence extended the lead back to six (13-7), but Howard closed the quarter with a 7-0 run to take a 14-13 lead.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• The first five minutes of the second quarter featured five lead changes and Providence held a 22-21 lead at the media timeout (4:55).
• Howard outscored Providence 10-5 over the final 4:17 of the quarter to take a 31-26 lead at halftime.
Sabou Gueye and Teneisia Brown each scored five points in the first half. Brown was limited to just four and a half minutes of action in the first half due to foul trouble.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• Providence started the third quarter with an 8-0 scoring run to claim a 34-31 lead.
• Howard responded with a 10-0 run to regain the lead (41-34) and force a Providence timeout with 4:56 left on the clock.
• Gueye halted the Bison's run with a traditional three-point play at the 3:28 mark to get Providence within four (41-37).
• Howard used a 9-2 run in the final 3:15 of the quarter, including a three at the buzzer to claim a 50-39 lead.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• Back-to-back buckets by Gueye and Princess Moody got Providence within nine with 8:29 to play (52-43).
• A 12-3 run helped the Bison extend their lead to 18 (64-46) with 2:20 remaining.
Payton Dunbar helped spark an 8-0 run for Providence with six points on two traditional three-point plays. 
• The run cut the Friars' deficit to 64-54, but Howard won the game, 68-56
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Gueye led the Friars' with 16 points on 6-11 shooting and collected a game-high four steals.
• Dunbar scored 12 points on 4-9 shooting and added a game-high four assists.
• Providence finished the game with a 39-37 advantage on the glass. 
Princess Moody recorded a game-high seven rebounds, while Teneisia Brown and Audrey Shields contributed six rebounds each.
• Brown played just 21 minutes due to foul trouble. She recorded eight points, one assist and one steal and was one of just two Friars with a positive plus/minus (+2).
• The Friars committed 20 turnovers in the game, compared to Howard's 11. The Bison used a 26-12 scoring advantage in points off turnovers.
• The Friars will play five-consecutive games at home in Alumni Hall to open the season. Additionally, eight of the team's 11 non-conference games will be played at Alumni Hall.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will host Central Connecticut State University on Monday, Nov. 10 at 7:00 p.m. The game will be played at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
