Women’s Soccer Set To begin 2023 Season Against Iona and Quinnipiac University

The Friars will host Iona University for their home opener on Thursday, Aug. 17 on Chapey Field at 6:30 p.m.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's soccer team is set to open the 2023 season against Iona University on Thursday, Aug. 17 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I. The Friars will then hist the Quinnipiac University Bobcats on Sunday, Aug. 20.

FRIARS IN 2022… The Friars finished with a 4-9-5 overall record and 2-4-4 in BIG-EAST conference play.
 
The Friars earned three ALL-BIG EAST selections in 2022. Senior Meg Hughes and recent graduate Alexis Rothman were named to the ALL-BIG EAST Second Team. Additionally, sophomore Ella McBride earned BIG EAST All-Freshman Team honors.  
 
Hughes has earned ALL-BIG EAST selections the past three years and looks to make that four as she returns for her senior year. She is currently ranked 12th on the all-time scoring leaderboard for Providence College with 43 points. Junior Gillian Kenney started 17 of the 18 games and was third on the team in points (6). Returning senior Emma Bodmer started in goal last year for the Friars all 18 games.
 
THREE MEMBERS OF THE FRIARS QUALIFY FOR THE 2024 FIFA UNDER-20 WORLD CUP… Two sophomores, Ella McBride (Peterborough, Canada) and Thaea Mouratidis (Scarborough, Canada), and incoming freshman Kayla Briggs (Toronto, Canada) have qualified for the 2024 FIFA Under-20 World Cup with Canada Soccer's Under-20 Women's National Team. The team earned a third-place finish at the Concacaf Women's Under-20 Championship after defeating Costa Rica, 5-3, in the third-place game.
 
MEG HUGHES NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-BIG EAST TEAM… Hughes was the lone Friar to receive preseason recognition as a member of the Preseason ALL-BIG EAST Team. This is Meg Hughes's third year in a row being named to the Preseason ALL-BIG EAST Team. 
 
NEWCOMERS…Providence welcomes nine student-athletes to the program this season including three graduate transfers and six freshmen. The three graduate transfers are Corinne Dente (Stamford, Conn.), Emma Derry (Leominster, Mass.), and Katherine McElroy (Brookline, Mass.). Dente played 37 career games at forward for University of Louisville totaling two goals and one assist. Derry started 50 of her 59 career games on the backline for the University of Rhode Island where she registered two assists. McElroy was a four-year member of the women's soccer program at the University of Michigan where she appeared in goal for five games during the 2022 season.
 
The incoming freshman class includes Kayla Briggs (Toronto, Canada), Araceli Cloutier (Bedford, N.H.), Marryn Gruhn (Northport, N.Y.), Samantha Kolb (Long Beach, N.Y.), Naiya McFarlane (Ajax, Canada), and Ava Ripanti (Townsend, Del.).
 
SERIES HISTORY AGAINST IONA… The Friars will face the Gaels for the sixth time in program history. Providence holds a 4-1-0 overall record against Iona. In their last meeting, Providence shut out Iona, 4-0, in Providence R.I. in 2010.
 
SCOUTING THE GAELS… In 2022, Iona finished 8-7-4 overall and 3-6-1 in the Metro Atlantic Conference. The Gaels return their top-two leading scorers, Kedarjah Lewis, who tallied five goals and 14 points and Samantha Hogan, who recorded two goals and eight points.
 
SERIES HISTORY AGAINST QUINNIPIAC… The Friars hold a 7-4-0 record against the Bobcats. In their last meeting, Providence lost 1-0 in Hamden, Conn., in 2012.
 
SCOUTING THE BOBCATS… In 2022, Quinnipiac finished 15-3-1 overall and 9-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Bobcats will return five players who earned 2022 All-MAAC Team honors. Courtney Chochol, Markela Brjleri, Olivia Scott, and Kayla Mingachos all received Frist-Team honors and goalkeeper Sofia Lospinoso received Second-team honors.  
 
 
UP NEXT…The Friars will travel to Kingston, R.I. to face the University of Rhode Island on Sunday, Aug. 27. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. et.
