Josh Oduro, Davonte Gaines, Justyn Fernandez, Garwey Dual, Rich Barron, and Donovan Santoro will join the Friars next season.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College Head Coach Kim English announced today (April 19) that Josh Oduro of Gainesville, Va. (George Mason University), Davonte Gaines of Buffalo, N.Y. (George Mason University and Tennessee), Justyn Fernandez of Richmond, Va. (George Mason University), Garwey Dual of Carmel, Ind., Rich Barron of Chicago, Ill., and Donovan Santoro of Austin, Texas will join the Friars for the 2023-24 season. Oduro, Gaines, Fernandez and Barron each signed an athletic aid agreement to attend Providence. Dual signed a National Letter of Intent on Monday and Santoro signed a NLI in November.
"We are excited to have Josh, Davonte, Justyn, Garwey, Rich and Donovan join the Friar program next season," English said. "We have a talented core of players in place from last season's NCAA Tournament team and we are looking forward to adding these six to an already strong roster. All the players are eager to get the group together and start building toward next season."
Oduro, who played four seasons at George Mason, has one season of eligibility remaining. Oduro, a 6-foot-9-inch, 235-pound forward, averaged 12.0 points and 6.4 rebounds in 113 career games at George Mason. He scored 1,358 points and grabbed 718 rebounds. In 2021-22, Oduro led the Atlantic 10 in scoring as he averaged 17.7 ppg (479 points). He also ranked eighth in the league in rebounding (7.5 rpg) and field goal percentage (.529) and sixth in blocked shots (1.7 bpg). For his efforts, Oduro was named First Team All-Atlantic 10 and First Team All-NABC All-District. In his senior season, he received his second First Team All-Atlantic 10 accolade and a Second Team All-NABC honor after he averaged 15.6 ppg and 7.9 rpg. Also in 2022-23, Oduro led the A-10 in rebounding (9.1 rpg) and offensive rebounding (3.11 orpg) in league play and ranked sixth in scoring (17.6) and eighth in field goal percentage (.580). He paced the A-10 and ranked 23rd nationally with 13 double-doubles.
Gaines, a 6-foot-7-inch, 181-pound guard, spent his first two seasons at Tennessee before transferring to George Mason for his junior and senior years. He has one season of eligibility remaining. In 2022-23, he averaged 7.3 ppg and 6.1 rpg. Gaines shot 34 percent (35-102) from three-point territory and 74 percent (32-43) from the free-throw line. He recorded a game and career-high 23 points (8-13 FG, 4-9 3pt FG) and grabbed eight rebounds in a win at Richmond on March 4. In his junior season, Gaines averaged 10.2 ppg and a team-best 8.1 rpg. He also was second on the team in three-point shooting in 2021-22, making 40.2 percent of his attempts (41-102). Gaines registered a career best 17-rebound effort versus Saint Louis on February 2, 2022.
Fernandez, a 6-foot-5-inch, 200 pound guard, played one season at George Mason where he averaged 18.3 minutes and 5.6 points per game while shooting 35.2 percent from three-point range in A-10 action . He played in all 33 games last season as a freshman, while making 13 starts. Fernandez recorded a career-high 18 points (5-8 FG), and added five rebounds in a win over Massachusetts on February 3. Prior to attending George Mason, he was a consensus 4-star recruit. Fernandez was ranked No. 74 in Class of 2022 by ESPN.com and No. 80 in 247 Sports composite. He spent his first three seasons of his high school career at Monacan High School (16.6 ppg as sophomore) and Virginia Episcopal (17.0 ppg in 2020-21) in the greater Richmond area before enrolling at IMG Academy in the Fall of 2021.
Dual and Santoro both attend Southern California Academy in Northridge, Calif., where they played for head coaches Julius Von Hanzlik and Chris Chaney.
Dual, a 6-foot-5-inch, 180-pound guard, transferred to Southern California Academy for his senior season after attending Carmel (Ind.) High School. In 2022-23, Dual averaged 16.0 points, 7.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game. He recorded 20 points, five assists and five steals in a 48-33 win over Hillcrest Prep at the Chick-fil-A Classic in December. He attended the Nike Hoop Summit on April 13 in Portland and played for the World Team. Dual is rated as a four-star prospect, according to ESPN.com, Rivals.com and 247Sports.com. He is ranked No. 37 by ESPN.com, No. 35 by Rivals.com and No. 48 by 247Sports.com composite.
Santoro, a 6-foot-8-inch, 185-pound forward transferred to Southern California Academy after playing at Westlake High School in Austin, Texas. He played on the Southern California Academy Post Grad National Team and averaged 14.0 points per game in 2022-23. Santoro also shot 40 percent from behind the three-point arc this past season. In 2021-22, he helped Westlake post a 38-2 mark and advance to the Texas High School Semifinals. His squad recorded a 14-0 record in its district. For his efforts, Santoro earned second team All-District honors.
Barron, a 6-foot-5-inch, 220-pound wing, attends St. Ignatius in Chicago. He played for Head Coach Matt Monroe at St. Ignatius. Barron had a strong senior season, earning IBCA 3A All-State First Team accolades after he averaged 16.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists. Barron also garnered Chicago Catholic League All-Conference First Team honors. In 2021-22, he received All-State honors and Chicago Sun Times All-City recognition after averaging 15.6 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.2 steals, while shooting 36 percent from beyond the arc.
