Men’s and Women’s Track Teams Compete In Day One Of The BIG EAST Championships.

At the end of the first day of competition, the Friars had four top-three finishes and many qualifiers for tomorrow’s finals.

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Providence College men's and women's track teams competed in the first day of the BIG EAST Indoor Championships on Friday, Feb. 24 at the Dr. Conrad Worrill Indoor Track and Field Facility in Chicago, Ill. At the end of the first day of competition, the Friars had four top-three finishes and many qualifiers for tomorrow's finals.
 
On the women's side, Lilly Tuck (Sunderland, Canada) finished runner-up in the 5,000-meters with a time of 16:10.40. Orla O'Connor (Waterford, Ireland) finished seventh in 16:38.48.
 
Halle Atkinson (Franklin, Mass.), Niamh Gowing (Dublin, Ireland), Alex O'Neill (Ennis, Ireland) and Tessa Hunt (Wellington, New Zealand) finished third overall in the distance medley in 11.23.97.
 
Kimberley May (Auckland, New Zealand) and Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England) both automatically qualified for the mile finals tomorrow. May won her heat in a time of 4:46.78 and Flockhart finished second in her heat with 4:48.60. The finals for the mile are set for 11:30 a.m. tomorrow.
 
In the 60-meter hurdles preliminaries, Nicole Borowiec (Morristown, N.J.) ran an 8.83 to qualify for the finals that will start at 11:50 a.m. tomorrow.
 
Meg Hughes (Rochester, Mass.) set a personal record of 56.85 in the 400-meter preliminaries, qualifying for the finals that will be tomorrow at 12:10 p.m.
 
Alex O'Neill ran a 2:11.04 in the 800-meter preliminaries to qualify for the finals that are set for 12:50 p.m. tomorrow.
 
On the men's side, four friars qualified for the mile finals tomorrow. Angus White (New Plymouth, New Zealand) and Michael Morgan (Sligo, Ireland) finished top-four 4:08.35 and 4:13.34, respectively. Zane Powell (Auckland, New Zealand) ran a 4:11.23, followed by Jacob Hefele (Danbury, Conn.) with 4:13.66. The finals for the mile are set for 11:40 a.m. tomorrow.
 
In the 800-meter preliminaries, Josh Lewin (West Chester, Pa.) finished second in his heat with a time of 1:53.65 to qualify for the finals. Tim Dolan (Cinnaminson, N.J.) also qualified with a time of 1:54.08. The finals will start at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow.
 
Marcelo Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) earned the bronze medal in the 5,000-meters with a time of 13:52.37. Abdel Laadjel (Lucan, Ireland) finished fifth in the event in a time of 14:04.59.
 
Pat Thygesen (Brisbane, Australia), Will Rainey (San Jose, Calif.), Liam Back (New Plymouth, New Zealand), and DJ Principe (Johnston, R.I.) placed second overall in the distance medley with a time of 9:38.04.
 
The second day of the BIG EAST Indoor Championships feature the finals of the 400-meters, mile, 800-meters and 60M Hurdles. Providence will also race in the men's and women's 3,000 meter, the men's triple jump, and both the men's and women's 4x800m and 4x400m. Events begin at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow and will be live streamed on FloSports.
