Women’s Soccer Prepares for DePaul and St. John’s

The Friars will face DePaul on Thursday, Oct. 5 at 4:00 p.m. in Chicago, Ill.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's soccer team will travel to Chicago, Ill. to face DePaul on Thursday, October 5. The Friars will then travel to Queens, N.Y. to face BIG EAST foe St. John's on Sunday, October 8 at 1:00 p.m.

SCOUTING THE FRIARS… Providence enters the weekend with a 7-2-1 overall record and a 2-0-1 record in BIG EAST play. Most recently, the Friars tied Butler (1-1) on Thursday, October 1 in Indianapolis, Ind. and defeated Creighton (3-1) at home. The Friars defense has only let up five goals through their first 10 games.
 
Senior Meg Hughes (Rochester, Mass) leads Providence's offense with 12 points through the first 10 games. Hughes currently ranks fourth in the BIG EAST in goals with six. She now ranks in the top-seven all-time in career scoring at Providence College with 55 points. 
 
Senior Kyla Gallagher (Stamford, Conn.) has nine points for the Friars on four goals and an assist. Kayla Briggs (Toronto, Canada), Gillian Kenney (Hanover, Mass.) and Thaea Mouratidis (Scarborough, Canada) all have six points for the Friars' offense.
 
Goalkeepers Emma Bodmer (Monroe Township, N.J.) and Katherine McElroy (Brookline, Mass.) occupy the number two and three spots for save percentage in the BIG EAST. Bodmer has a save percentage of .905 while McElory has a save percentage of .889.
 
THREE MEMBERS OF THE FRIARS QUALIFY FOR THE 2024 FIFA UNDER-20 WORLD CUP… Two sophomores, Ella McBride(Peterborough, Canada) and Thaea Mouratidis (Scarborough, Canada), and incoming freshman Kayla Briggs (Toronto, Canada) have qualified for the 2024 FIFA Under-20 World Cup with Canada Soccer's Under-20 Women's National Team. The team earned a third-place finish at the Concacaf Women's Under-20 Championship after defeating Costa Rica, 5-3, in the third-place game.
 
MEG HUGHES NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-BIG EAST TEAM… Hughes was the lone Friar to receive preseason recognition as a member of the Preseason ALL-BIG EAST Team. This is Hughes' third year in a row being named to the Preseason ALL-BIG EAST Team. Hughes has played 55 career games for the Friars and has totaled 49 points on 18 goals and 13 assists. She currently ranks ninth on the Friars' all-time scoring list.
 
MARRYN GRUHN NAMED BIG EAST FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK…Gruhn, who was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, was the lone goal scorer for the Friars in their tie against Butler. Gruhn scored her goal with one second left in the first half to beat the buzzer. 
 
MEG HUGHES NAMED TO BIG EAST HONOR ROLL…Hughes, who was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, led Providence with two goals over their win against Creighton. Hughes' two goals now rank her in the top-seven all-time in career scoring at Providence College with 55 points. This marked her second two-goal game of her career. 
 
NEWCOMERS…Providence welcomes nine student-athletes to the program this season including three graduate transfers and six freshmen. The three graduate transfers are Corinne Dente(Stamford, Conn.), Emma Derry (Leominster, Mass.), and Katherine McElroy (Brookline, Mass.). Dente played 37 career games at forward for University of Louisville totaling two goals and one assist. Derry started 50 of her 59 career games on the backline for the University of Rhode Island where she registered two assists. McElroy was a four-year member of the women's soccer program at the University of Michigan where she appeared in goal for five games during the 2022 season.
 
The incoming freshman class includes Kayla Briggs (Toronto, Canada), Araceli Cloutier (Bedford, N.H.), Marryn Gruhn (Northport, N.Y.), Samantha Kolb (Long Beach, N.Y.), Naiya McFarlane (Ajax, Canada), and Ava Ripanti (Townsend, Del.).
 
SERIES HISTORY AGAINST DEPAUL… The Friars hold an 8-7-4 record against the Blue Demons. Last season, Providence defeated DePaul 2-1 at home. The Friars haven't lost to the Blue Demons since 2016. 
 
SCOUTING THE BLUE DEMONS…  DePaul enters Thursday night with a 4-5-1 overall record and a 0-3 record in the BIG EAST. Last week, they were defeated by Xavier (3-0) and Georgetown (1-0). 
 
DePaul has been outscored by opponents 12-8. Graduate student Ellie Mink leads the Blue Demon's offense with six points on three goals. Beth Smyth is second in points for DePaul with four. Goalkeeper Elena Milam ranks first in the BIG EAST in saves per game (5.5) and ranks sixth in save percentage (.821).
 
SERIES HISTORY AGAINST ST. JOHNS… The Friars hold a 17-18-5 record against the Red Storm. Last season, Providence lost 1-0 to St. John's in Providence, R.I. The Friars haven't won in Queens, N.Y. since 2014. 
 
SCOUTING THE RED STORM… St. Johns enters the weekend with a 6-4-2 overall record and a 1-3 record in the BIG EAST. Last week, they lost to Georgetown (3-1) and UConn (2-1).
 
St. John's outscores opponents 21-16. Graduate student Jessica Garziano leads the BIG EAST in points with 21. Lauryn Tran ranks fourth in the BIG EAST in points with 12. Goalkeeper Maria O'Sullivan has started all 11 games registering 19 saves and 12 goals against. 
 
UP NEXT…  Next week the Friars host Marquette on Thursday, Oct. 12 at 6:00 p.m. They then travel to Washington, D.C. to face Georgetown on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 1:00 p.m.
