Women’s Soccer Will Host No. 20 Xavier and UConn in BIG EAST Play

These will be the final regular-season home games for the Friars.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College women's soccer team will host No. 20 Xavier on Thursday, October 19 at 6:00 p.m. and UConn on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 1:00 p.m. for senior night. On Oct. 22, the team will recognize seven seniors and one graduate student as they take the field for their final regular season game on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.

SCOUTING THE FRIARS
… Providence enters the weekend with an  8-2-4 overall record and a 3-0-4 record in the BIG EAST. The Friars are currently in third place in the BIG EAST with 13 points. Most recently, the Friars defeated Marquette, 1-0, on Thursday, October 12 in Providence, and tied No. 22 Georgetown, 1-1, on Sunday, October 15 in Washington, D.C.
 
Senior Meg Hughes (Rochester, Mass.) leads Providence's offense 16 points through 14 games. Hughes currently ranks second in the BIG EAST in goals with eight. She now ranks in the top-six all-time in career scoring at Providence College with 59 points.
 
Senior Kyla Gallagher (Stamford, Conn.) has nine points for the Friars on four goals and an assist. Gillian Kenney (Hanover, Mass.) has eight points for the Friars' offense on four goals. 
 
Goalkeepers Emma Bodmer (Monroe Township, N.J.) and Katherine McElroy (Brookline, Mass.) occupy the first and fifth spots for save percentage in the BIG EAST. Bodmer has a save percentage of .909 while McElroy has a save percentage of .846. 
 
THREE MEMBERS OF THE FRIARS QUALIFY FOR THE 2024 FIFA UNDER-20 WORLD CUP… Two sophomores, Ella McBride (Peterborough, Canada) and Thaea Mouratidis (Scarborough, Canada), and incoming freshman Kayla Briggs (Toronto, Canada) have qualified for the 2024 FIFA Under-20 World Cup with Canada Soccer's Under-20 Women's National Team. The team earned a third-place finish at the Concacaf Women's Under-20 Championship after defeating Costa Rica, 5-3, in the third-place game.
 
MEG HUGHES NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-BIG EAST TEAM… Hughes was the lone Friar to receive preseason recognition as a member of the Preseason ALL-BIG EAST Team. This is Hughes' third year in a row being named to the Preseason ALL-BIG EAST Team. Hughes has played 62 career games for the Friars and has totaled 57 points on 22 goals and 13 assists. She currently ranks sixth on the Friars' all-time scoring list.
 
KAYLA BRIGGS NAMED OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK… Briggs was named Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, Oct.16 for the second time this season. She recorded the game-winning goal against Marquette and marked an assist in the game at No. 22 Georgetown.
 
AVERY SNEAD EARNS BIG EAST WEEKLY HONOR ROLL… Avery Snead (Wrentham, Mass.) earned BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Oct. 16. She was a key player in the defensive line, allowing only one goal in two games for the Friars. Snead registered 180 minutes through the two games, recording four shots for the Friars.
  
NEWCOMERS…Providence welcomes nine student-athletes to the program this season including three graduate transfers and six freshmen. The three graduate transfers are Corinne Dente (Stamford, Conn.), Emma Derry (Leominster, Mass.), and Katherine McElroy (Brookline, Mass.). Dente played 37 career games at forward for University of Louisville totaling two goals and one assist. Derry started 50 of her 59 career games on the backline for the University of Rhode Island where she registered two assists. McElroy was a four-year member of the women's soccer program at the University of Michigan where she appeared in goal for five games during the 2022 season.
 
The incoming freshman class includes Kayla Briggs (Toronto, Canada), Araceli Cloutier (Bedford, N.H.), Marryn Gruhn (Northport, N.Y.), Samantha Kolb (Long Beach, N.Y.), Naiya McFarlane (Ajax, Canada), and Ava Ripanti (Townsend, Del.).
 
SERIES HISTORY AGAINST No. 20 XAVIER… Xavier leads all-time series against Providence, 5-4-1. Last season, Providence tied Xavier, 0-0, in Cincinnati. The last time the Friars defeated Xavier at home was in 2016 when they defeated the Musketeers, 2-1, in overtime.
  
SCOUTING THE MUSKETEERS… Xavier enters the weekend with an 11-2-3 overall record and a 4-0-3 record in the BIG EAST. Last week, the Musketeers defeated St. John's, 3-0, at home. The Musketeers are currently 5-1-1 on the road.
 
Samantha Wiehe leads her team in points (16), goals (six), and assists (four). She is tied for first with Hughes in the BIG EAST in game-winning goals (four). Sixteen players for the Musketeers have registered at least one point this season. Goalkeeper Maria Galley has played 1,440 minutes this season for Xavier. She is fourth in the BIG EAST in save percentage (.855).
 
SERIES HISTORY AGAINST UCONN… UConn leads the all-time series against the Friars with a 29-4-3 record. Last season, Providence tied UConn, 0-0, on the road. The last time the Friars defeated the Huskies at home was in 2019 when they won, 2-1.
 
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES… UConn enters the weekend with a 6-3-5 overall record and a 3-1-3 record in the BIG EAST. Last week, the Huskies tied Butler, 0-0, in Indianapolis.


Chioma Okafor leads the Huskies in goals (four) and points (10). She is first in the BIG EAST in shots (55) and shots per game (3.93). Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Mahoney has registered 37 saves for UConn, she is third in the BIG EAST in save percentage (.860).
 
UP NEXT… On Oct.26, the Friars travel to Villanova for the final regular-season game of the season. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 p.m.
