Providence College Men’s Basketball Holds Annual Mal Brown Scrimmage

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team held the Mal Brown Intra-Squad Scrimmage on Saturday, October 14 at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, R.I. Prior to the scrimmage, the women's basketball team hosted a free clinic and autograph session. The White Team, led by junior Bryce Hopkins (Oak Park, Ill.) earned a 46-43 victory over the Black Team, led by redshirt-sophomore Rafael Castro (Dover, N.J.). Hopkins and Castro both notched a game-high 15 points.

"It was a good opportunity for us to get in front of our fans," Head Coach Kim English said. "We are fortunate it was for a good cause with one hundred percent of the proceeds benefitting the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. It was good for our guys to get out on the court where we will be playing games soon."

FIRST HALF:
Bryce Hopkins opened the scoring for the White Team with a three-pointer.
• The Black Team answered with back-to-back baskets from Corey Floyd, Jr., and Rafael Castro, 4-3.
• At the first time out, the game was tied, 6-6.
• At the 5:20 mark, Devin Carter knocked down three-pointer to give the White Team a 14-9 lead.
• The White Team led 18-12 at the second timeout. Hopkins led both teams in scoring with seven points.
• With 1:54 left in the half, Castro scored a fast-break dunk for the Black Team to cut their deficit to two, 22-20.
• The White Team led a 27-22 lead at the half. Donovan Santoro and Hopkins led for the White Team with eight points each. Castro led for the Black Team with nine points and three rebounds.
• All 10 starters entered the scoring column in the first half.
•The White Team shot 8-17 (47.1%) from the field, 5-11 (45.5%) from three, and 6-6 (100%) from the free throw line in the first half.
•The Black Team shot 9-16 (56.3%) from the field, 0-2 (0%) from three, and 4-4 (100%) from the free throw line in the first half. 

SECOND HALF:
Ticket Gaines scored the opening basket of the second half with a three-pointer for the Black Team, 27-25.
 • At the 7:23 mark, Garwey Dual completed a dunk to extend the White Team's lead to five. The White led 33-28 entering the first timeout.
•Gaines (Black Team) tied the game with a three-pointer with 5:02 left in the half, 35-35.
•The game remained back and forth for the remaining five minutes. With 31.7 seconds left, Hopkins took the lead for the White team with an empathetic dunk, 43-41.
• The White Team earned a 46-43 victory.

NOTES/HIGHLIGHTS:
•The White Team finished 13-29 (44.8%) from the field, 5-15 (33.3%) from three, and 15-17 (88.2%) from the free throw line.
•The Black Team finished 17-32 (53.1%) from the field, 3-12 (25.0%) from three, and 6-8 (75.0%) from the free throw line.
•Gaines (Black Team) and Eli DeLaurier (White Team) each finished with a game-high 6 rebounds. 
•Attendance – 1,652
