Field Hockey Prepares For A Pair Of Games Against Connecticut And Lafayette

The Friars travel to Storrs, Conn. for a BIG EAST match against the Huskies on Friday; PC returns to Lennon Family Field for a senior day match against Lafayette on Sunday.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team will head to Storrs, Conn. on Friday, Oct. 13 to face BIG EAST foe Connecticut at 1:00 p.m. The Friars will return home to Lennon Family Field to host Lafayette on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 1:00 p.m. Prior to the start of Sunday's match, the program will honor its seniors and graduate students.

SCOUTING PROVIDENCE COLLEGE (7-5, 1-3 BIG EAST): 
• Providence enters the weekend with a 7-5 overall record, including a 7-2 mark at Lennon Family Field.
• Fourteen players have scored at least one goal this season through 12 games, including seven multi-goal scorers.
Lisa McNamara leads the Friars in scoring with 13 points on five goals and three assists. She has attempted 14 shots this season and has put 10 of them on target. Two of her five goals have been from the stroke mark this season and is 2-3 overall this year in penalty-stroke opportunities.
• McNamara's five goals mark a single-season career high. She also has reached double figures in the scoring column for just the second time in her and her 13 points is a single-season best.  
• Defender Eleonore de Keyser was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. She missed her first two seasons with an injury and returned in 2022 to start all 17 games as a central defender. 
• Last weekend, De Keyser recorded a career-high seven points in the Friars' victory over Queens. She tallied three goals and one assist on the day. It marked the first hat trick by a Friar since Stephanie Guglielmo during the 2014 season. She was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Oct. 10. De Keyser scored her first career goal against ODU on Sept. 29.
• De Keyser ranks second on the team in points (11) and is tied for second in goals (four).
Bella DelNegro is third on the team in scoring with nine points on two goals and a team-best five assists. She posted the first multi-assist game of her career against Queens (two).
Celia Preveza and Ally DeCoste are tied for second [with De Keyser] in goals scored, with four each. Preveza owns nine points this season, while DeCoste has registered eight points.
• DeCoste has scored a goal in four of the last six games.
Florencia Talarico was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Oct. 10. Last week, she delivered the assist on Providence's game-winning goal against BIG EAST foe Temple and tacked on an assist in the very next game against Queens. It is the first time this season she has registered a point in consecutive games. She ranks second on the team this season in assists (four).
Asia Porter has played 702 minutes in the cage for Providence. She owns a 1.45 goals against average and a 0.726 save percentage. She has posted three shutout victories this season and has combined with Zoe Onken for three others.
• Providence was picked to finish fifth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll.
• The Friars have added eight newcomers to the roster for the 2023 season. Five of those eight have seen time in the starting line-up.
• In May, the program announced its 2023 team captains: Emily Antunes, Marley Mailloux, Eleonore de Keyser and Lisa McNamara.
• Providence College Head Coach Diane Madl and Assistant Coach Kourtney Kennedy both graduated from Connecticut, where they enjoyed impressive playing careers. Madl was a two-time All-American and earned the Honda Broderick Award upon completion of her career as the Nation's top field hockey player. She helped the Huskies claim a National Championship in 1985. Kennedy, and All-Region and All-BIG EAST First-Team pick, led the Huskies to four-straight BIG EAST Tournament titles and four NCAA Tournament appearances. She was part of the Huskies perfect 23-0 season in 2017, which resulted in a National Championship. 
 
SCOUTING CONNECTICUT (5-8, 2-2 BIG EAST):
• UConn enters the weekend with a 5-8 overall record, including a 2-2 mark in the BIG EAST.
• The Huskies have faced six nationally ranked opponents this season and own a 1-5 record in those games. 
• UConn has earned victories in four of its last six games, but dropped its most recent match against No. 19 UMass, 3-1, on Oct. 8.
• Julia Bressler leads the Huskies in scoring with 17 points on eight goals and one assist. 
• Claire Jandewerth (12 points), McKenna Sergi (12 points), Sol Simone (11 points) and Juana Garcia (10 points) have each reached double figures in the scoring column. 
• Simone leads UConn in assists (seven).
• Twelve players have scored at least one goal this season, including seven multi-goal scorers.
• Cheyenne Sprecher has played 1,135 minutes in the cage this season and owns a 1.37 goals against average and a 0.750 save percentage. Five of her seven victories have been shutouts.
 
SCOUTING LAFAYETTE (6-5):
• Lafayette enters the weekend with a 6-5 overall record and will face Boston University on Oct. 14 before traveling to Providence on Sunday.
• The Leopards have won three-straight games and five of their last six matches overall.
• Three players have reached double figures in the scoring column, led by Lineke Spaans (17 points). She has tallied five goals and a team-best seven assists. Three of her five goals have been game winners.
• Stella Malinowski is second in scoring with 14 points on six goals and two assists, while Josephine van Wijk has totaled 13 points on six goals and one assist.
• Eight players on the roster have scored at least one goal this season, including five multi-goal scorers.
• Raffi Fragomeni has played 550 minutes in the cage this season and has compiled a 1.64 goals against average and a 0.651 save percentage. Emma Garvey has played 101 minutes, including all 60 minutes in Lafayette's most recent game vs. Drexel for senior day. Garvey earned the 1-0 victory with two saves.

• Providence will return to action on Friday, Oct. 20 against Georgetown. The match is scheduled to be played at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. at 4:00 p.m.
