HALIFAX, N.S. – Providence College freshman
Jaroslav Chmelar (Nove Mesto nad Matuji, Czechia) earned a silver medal with Czechia after the team was defeated by Canada in overtime, 3-2, in the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship Final on Thursday (Jan. 5) in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Chmelar, a fifth-round pick of the New York Rangers in the 2021 NHL Draft, made his second World Junior Championship appearance, finishing the tournament with five points on three goals and two assists with a +8 rating in seven games. He was named Czechia's Player of the Game on Dec. 31 against Germany after registering two goals and an assist. In his freshman season at Providence College, he has registered six goals and four assists in 18 games played with a +3 rating.
Chmelar was just one of two NCAA players to participate in the gold medal game on Thursday, joining Canada's Adam Fantilli (Michigan). The silver medal is the 18
th medal won by a Friar in an IIHF event. Czechia earned its first medal in the event since winning bronze in 2005.
