Women's Hoops Falls To Creighton, 64-46

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Creighton, 64-46, on Tuesday, Jan. 24 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The Bluejays, who are receiving votes in the national coaches' poll, improved to 13-6 (7-4 BIG EAST), while the Friars dropped to 12-10 (3-8 BIG EAST).
 
1ST QUARTER:
• Providence got out to a 4-0 lead midway through the first half as both teams were slow to find offense.
• The Bluejays used an 8-0 run to claim an 8-4 advantage with 1:57 left in the quarter.
Emily Archibald halted the run with a three-pointer from the baseline at the 1:35 mark.
• Morgan Maly hit Creighton's third triple of the quarter as time expired to give the Jays an 11-7 lead at the intermission.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• A 6-1 scoring spurt gave the Bluejays a 19-10 edge on the scoreboard with 3:46 to play.
• Providence came alive with a 10-2 scoring run to close the deficit to one (21-20) with 28-seconds left in the half.
• Lauren Jensen sank a pair of free throws with 6.6-seconds left to provide Creighton a three-point cushion at the half (23-20).
 
3RD QUARTER:
• Efosa opened the third with a pair of free throws before Creighton went on a 7-0 run to gain a 30-22 advantage.
• At the media timeout, Creighton owned a 36-30 lead, as both teams went into the break with two-minute scoring droughts.
• Back-to-back threes gave Creighton its first double-digit lead of the night (45-33) at the 1:42 mark.
• Creighton outscored Providence 25-25 overall in the third to claim a 48-35 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• Creighton's lead ballooned to 20 midway through the fourth (60-40).
• The Friars went on a 6-0 run over the next 2:25 to chip away at the deficit (60-46).
• The Jays maintained separation down the stretch for a win.
 
NOTES:
• With the win, Creighton managed a split of the regular-season series with Providence. The Friars won the first game between the two teams (79-75) on Jan. 4, at which point Creighton was ranked 24th in the AP Poll and 25th in the coaches' poll.
• Providence lost for just the second time this season when holding its opponent below 40-percent shooting from the field. The Friars entered the game with an 11-1 record when doing so.
• Creighton shot 39.7-percent on the night (25-63), while the Friars converted just 30.6-percent of their shot attempts (15-49).
• Efosa was the lone Friar in double figures with 12 points. Eight of her 12 points came from the foul line (8-10).
Audrey Koch tallied eight points on 2-3 shooting from beyond the arc (2-2 FT).
Olivia Olsen's eight game double-digit scoring streak came to an end, as she finished the night with five points, five rebounds and one blocked shot.
• Emma Ronsiek scored a game-high 20 points for Creighton, while Moran Maly (13) and Jensen (12) rounded out the double-digit scorers.
• Creighton won the glass with a 42-30 rebounding edge and held a 34-18 advantage in points in the paint.
• It marked a stark contrast from the first meeting between the two programs, when Providence held a 36-31 edge in rebounding and dominated the paint, 42-18.
 
UP NEXT:
• The Friars return to action on Saturday, Jan. 28 against BIG EAST foe Xavier. The game will be played at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio and is scheduled to tip-off at 2:00 p.m.
