No.13 Women’s Hockey To Host No.14 UConn Huskies

The Friars are currently 17-8-2 overall and 12-6-2 in Hockey East play.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The No.13 Friars will face the No.14 UConn Huskies on Friday, Jan. 20, at 6:00 p.m. at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I.

Scouting the Friars
The Friars are currently 17-8-2 overall and 12-6-2 in Hockey East play. The Friars are coming off a mid-week matchup against the Boston University Terriers. On Tuesday, Jan. 17 the Friars and Terriers tied 2-2 in overtime. The Terriers went on to win the shootout, 2-1, for the extra Hockey East point.
 
Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) finished the night with 21 saves and currently holds a .936 save percentage with a 1.63 GAA this season. Lauren DeBlois (Lewiston, Maine) recorded two points comprised of a goal and an assist. Caroline Peterson (East Falmouth, Mass.) recorded the Friars' second goal.

As of Jan. 16, the Friars are ranked No.13 in the most recent USCHO NCAA Women's Hockey rankings. Providence received 70 votes.
 
Hockey East Award Winners
Claire Tyo was named Hockey East Defender of the Week as announced on Dec. 12 for tallying three assists in a single game on Dec. 10.

Sara Hjalmarsson was named Hockey East Player of the Week as announced on Nov. 21. Hjalmarsson was recognized for having a four-goal game against Maine on Nov. 19.
 
Abstreiter was named Hockey East Stop It Goaltender of the Week as announced on Nov. 21. Abstreiter was recognized for tallying her sixth shutout this season and 63 saves over the weekend.
 
Kirchmair was named Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Month as announced on Nov. 2. Kirchmair was recognized for leading the Friars in goals with seven and leading all of Hockey East in goals among freshman.
 
Kirchmair was named Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week as announced on Oct. 24. Kirchmair was recognized for earning two goals over the weekend. She has recorded seven goals and two assists across eight season games. She leads the Friars in goals and is second in points with nine.
 
Abstreiter was named Hockey East Goaltender of the Week as announced on Oct. 17. Abstreiter was recognized for another shutout weekend against Holy Cross. With a combined 25 saves she is the first goalie in program history to tally four-consecutive shutouts.
 
Abstreiter was named Hockey East Goaltender of the Week as announced on Oct. 10. Abstreiter was recognized after a shutout weekend over Union College and RPI, posting a combined 35 saves.
 
Hockey East Preseason Poll
The Friars were picked to finish fourth in the Hockey East Preseason Poll, which was released on Tuesday, Sept. 13. Providence received 61 points and was picked to finish behind Northeastern (90), Vermont (79) and Boston College (76). The Huskies, who won the 2022 Hockey East Tournament, received nine first place votes.
 
Fresh Friar Faces
Providence welcomes seven new players (three transfers and four freshmen) to the roster for the 2022-23 season. Noemi Neubauerova (Prague, Czech Republic) is a graduate student from Colgate University. Ida Press (Uppsala, Sweden) is a graduate student from University of Maine. Rachel Weiss (Calgary, Alberta) is a junior from Penn State. The four freshmen are Mégane Quirion (Saint-Eustache, Quebec), Kayla Kutes (Kirkland, Wa.), Reichen Kirchmair (Oakville, Ontario) and Cristina Cavaliere (Mississauga, Ontario).
 
Captains Named
Graduate student Caroline Peterson (East Falmouth, Mass.) was named captain for the 2022-23 season, along with alternate captains Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) a graduate student, senior Lauren DeBlois (Lewiston, Maine), and graduate student Hunter Barnett (Caledon, Ontario).
 
Scouting the Huskies
UConn currently holds a 16-8-2 overall record with a 10-7-2 Hockey East record. The Huskies last faced Boston College on Tuesday, Jan. 17 when they won, 3-1. As a team, UConn averages 28.1 shots per game and hold a .154 conversion rate on power plays with a 54.1 faceoff success percentage.
 
Who to Watch
Junior Jada Habisch and senior Coryn Tormala lead the Huskies in total points with 14. Habisch also leads the Huskies in goals with nine. Tormala is tied for the lead in assists with Riley Grimley and Claire Peterson with eight assists.  
 
Sophomore goaltender Tia Chan has played in 20 games for the Huskies this season. Chan has recorded 448 saves this season for a .935 save percentage and a 1.57 GAA.

All Time Series with the Huskies
Providence currently leads the all-time series record against UConn 49-24-10. The last time the Friars faced off against the Huskies was in November 2022. The Huskies swept the Friarss with a 2-1 win on Nov. 11 and 2-1 win on Nov. 12.
