The sophomore forward/guard is one of 50 players named to the Watch List.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - It was announced today (January 19) that sophomore Bryce Hopkins (Oak Park, Ill.) has been named one of 50 players for the Oscar Robertson National Player of the Year Award Midseason Watch List. Hopkins has helped the No. 22/20 Friars to a 14-5 mark and a 6-2 record in BIG EAST play.
Hopkins leads the Friars in scoring (16.4 ppg), rebounding (9.2) and double-doubles (seven). He ranks fifth in scoring and second in rebounding amongst BIG EAST players in overall action. In BIG EAST action, he is second in scoring (18.4 ppg) and rebounding (10.1 rpg). He has posted a team-best seven double-doubles, including a 29-point, 23-rebound, three-steal effort in a double-overtime win over Marquette (103-98) on December 20. He played 47 of the 50 minutes in the game. Hopkins' 20-20 game was the 34th in program history and the first since Jamine Peterson accomplished the feat when he posted 29 points and 20 rebounds versus Rutgers on Jan. 9, 2010. It also was the first in BIG EAST play since Angel Delgado (21 pts, 20 rbs.) of Seton Hall did it on January 22, 2017.
This is Hopkins' first season with Friars after transferring from Kentucky last spring.
Since the 1958-59 season, the USBWA has named a National Player of the Year. In 1998, the award was named in honor of the University of Cincinnati Hall of Famer and two-time USBWA Player of the Year Oscar Robertson. It is the nation's oldest award and the only one named after a former player.
At the conclusion of the regular season, the USBWA will name finalists for the award, which is voted on by the entire membership. The winner of the award will be announced at the 2023 Men's Final Four in Houston with the formal presentation to follow at the annual USBWA Awards Luncheon hosted by the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in 1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers. With some 900 members worldwide, it is one of the most influential organizations in college basketball. It has selected an All-America team since the 1956-57 season. For more information on the USBWA and the Oscar Robertson Trophy, contact executive director Malcolm Moran at 814-574-1485.
The Friars will return to action on Saturday versus DePaul at the Amica Mutual Pavilion at 2 p.m. on FS1. Fans interested in purchasing tickets to Friar games can visit Friars.com or call 401-865-GO PC.
