PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's and women's swimming and diving teams returned to action, albeit two different locations. The women's team defeated Assumption at home in Taylor Natatorium, 169-76. The men's team fell to BIG EAST foe Villanova, 119-80, on the road in Villanova, Pa.
The women had a successful day in the pool, earning first-place finishes in 11 of 12 individual events.
Katie Winklosky paced the Friars with three victories overall.

Maddy O'Connor – 800-meter SC Freestyle (9:47.64)
Katie Winklosky – 200-meter SC Freestyle (2:12.09); 400-meter SC Freestyle (4:43.02) and 200-meter SC IM (3:29.79)
Sally Alrutz – 100-meter SC Backstroke (1:06.37)
Annie Gathof – 200-meter SC Butterfly (2:30.38) and 100-meter SC Butterfly (1:08.46)
Taylor Loud – 50-meter SC Freestyle (27.85) and 100-meter SC Freestyle (1:01.52)
Julia McCarthy – 200-meter SC Backstroke (2:29.28)
Courtney Reilly – 200-meter SC Breaststroke (2:51.07)
On the men's side,
Will Layden topped the field in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 47.03.
Kevin Hood also scored a first-place finish on the day as he claimed victory in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:11.75). The duo stood as the lone Friars to win individual events against the Wildcats. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of
McGovern Brown,
Brian Cantin,
Aidan Hughes and Layden placed first with a time of 1:25.70.
Both squads return to action on Saturday, Jan. 21 against Holy Cross. The dual meet is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. in Worcester, Mass.
