Friar Legends Will Participate In “Friar Legacy Coaches Round Table” Discussion On July 28

PROVIDENCE, R.I – It was announced that the Friends of Friar Basketball in cooperation with Providence College Athletics will host a "Friar Legacy Coaches Round Table" on July 28 featuring Friar basketball legends Ed Cooley, Rick Pitino, Billy Donovan '87, Rick Barnes, Pete Gillen, and Tim Welsh.  The discussion, which will be moderated by Doris Burke '87, will take place in Providence College's Alumni Hall. The seven Friar basketball legends will discuss the impact that Providence College basketball has had on their careers and the influence they have had on each other.  Friar fans can purchase tickets for this event and proceeds will help benefit Friends of Friar Basketball and their goal of assisting former Friar basketball players, enriching the community, and aiding with Name, Image and Likeness funding. The "Friar Legacy Coaches Round Table" discussion will take place from 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. In addition to the discussion, fans who purchase tickets may attend a Welcome Reception from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. in the Ruane Friar Development Center. The Welcome Reception will include a tour of the Calabria Hall of Fame and a chance to socialize with the '87 Final Four Team, the '97 Elite Eight Team, and many other Friar Legends. Tickets for the event on July 28 are $500 and can be purchased by contacting Harold Starks at HStarks@providence.edu.

Doris Burke made 87 consecutive starts for the Friar women's team from 1984-1987. Burke earned a long list of accolades, including All-BIG EAST (1986, 1987) and All-American (1987).  She graduated as Providence's all-time assist leader (602). Burke is now one of the top basketball analysts for ESPN and ABC.

Rick Pitino coached the Friars from 1985-1987. Most notably, his 1987 team posted a 25-9 mark and advanced to the Final Four. Following his success at Providence, Pitino coached several other successful NCAA programs and NBA teams such as the 1996 National Champion Kentucky Wildcats, and the 2013 National Champion Louisville Cardinals, as well as the New York Knicks and Boston Celtics. Pitino will be entering his third season as head coach of the Iona University men's basketball team.

Billy Donovan played for Providence Men's Basketball from 1983-1987. Donovan averaged 20.6 points per game as a senior under Coach Pitino, and he was a crucial piece in the team's Final Four run in 1987. He was an Honorable Mention All-American in 1987. Donovan played professionally for the New York Knicks. At the conclusion of his playing career, he joined the coaching ranks. Donovan led the Florida Gators to back-to-back National Championships in 2006 and 2007.  He also has coached in the NBA for the Orlando Magic, Oklahoma City Thunder and is currently the head coach of the Chicago Bulls.
Rick Barnes coached Providence men's basketball from 1988-1994. Barnes coached the Friars to three NCAA Tournament appearances in 1989, 1990 and 1994. In 1994, Barnes had his best season as a coach at Providence. The team won the BIG EAST Tournament after posting a 20-10 record. After Providence, Rick Barnes coached at Clemson University (1994-1998), the University of Texas (1999-2015), and the University of Tennessee, where he remains as the head coach today (2015-Present).

Pete Gillen was head coach of the Friars from 1994-1998. In 1997, Gillen led the Friars to an NCAA Tournament where his squad advanced to the Elite Eight and finished with a record of 24-12. Gillen coached college basketball for 30 years, holding other head coaching positions at Xavier University (1985-1994) and the University of Virginia (1998-2005). He finished his coaching career with an overall record of 392-221.   He serves as a basketball analyst for CBS Sports.

Tim Welsh coached the Friars from 1998-2008. During his career at Providence, Welsh led the 2001 and 2004 Friars to NCAA Tournament appearances. Prior to coaching the Friars, Welsh coached at Iona University from 1995-1998. During his time at Iona, he led the Gaels to three regular season championships in the MAAC, as well as a MAAC Tournament Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in his final season. Welsh now serves as a basketball analyst for ESPN.

On March 22, 2011, Ed Cooley was named head coach of the Providence College men's basketball team. Prior to coaching at Providence, Cooley coached Fairfield University basketball from 2006-2011.  In 11 seasons at Providence, Cooley has led the Friars to NCAA Tournament six times (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2022).  He guided the team to a BIG EAST title in 2014. In 2022, the Friars captured the program's first BIG EAST Regular Season title and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. The 2022 squad posted a 27-6 mark. In honor of his success in 2022, Cooley was named Naismith Coach of the Year, Sporting News Coach of the Year, BIG EAST Coach of the Year, NABC District 5 Coach of the Year, and USBWA District 1 Coach of the Year. Ed Cooley ranks second all-time at Providence amongst Friar head coaches with a 221-141 record.
