PROVIDENCE, R.I. – It was announced today (March 16) that Providence College Head Coach Ed Cooley, junior guard Jared Bynum (Largo, Md.) and graduate forward Noah Horchler (Melbourne Beach, Fla.) each earned USBWA District 1 honors. Cooley was named USBWA Coach of the Year, while Bynum and Horchler were named to the USBWA All-District 1 Team.
Last week, Cooley became the first Friar coach to earn BIG EAST Coach of the Year and was named a semifinalist for Naismith Coach of the Year. Cooley has guided the Friars to a 25-5 mark. In BIG EAST league play, the Friars set a program record for wins after registering a 14-3 mark and capturing the program's first BIG EAST Regular Season title. The Friars, who finished in first place, were picked to finish seventh in the annual BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll which was released in October. On March 15, Cooley was named NABC District 5 Coach of the Year.
Cooley's Friars are ranked No. 13/13 in this week's national polls and have been ranked for 13-consecutive weeks. The Friars earned an at-large selection to the 2022 NCAA Tournament as a No. 4 seed. Providence is making its 21st appearance overall in the NCAA Tournament and sixth appearance under Cooley. The Friars' No. 4 seed is the highest in program history.
The Friars won a team-record, eight-consecutive BIG EAST games this season. They also have posted 20 or more wins for the sixth time under Cooley. The 25 victories is the highest win total during Cooley's 11 seasons at Providence. It also marks the most victories in a single season since 1986-87 (25-9). Additionally, Cooley led the team to a 16-1 record at home, which is the squad's best mark since 1973-74 (16-0).
Bynum had a break out season for the Friars. He led the team in scoring in BIG EAST games, averaging 15.6 ppg in 17 games. His 15.6 points per games ranked fifth in the league. He shot a team-best 46.5 percent (33-71) from behind the three-point arc in league play. Bynum also ranked third in league in assists per game (4.9) in BIG EAST action. In overall action, he averages 12.7 ppg and 4.2 assists per game. He was named BIG EAST Player of the Week twice this season. He scored a career-high 32 points in the Friars' win at Georgetown. He was 7-8 from three-point territory and 11-15 from the field. He came off the bench in 14 of the team's 17 league games and became the first BIG EAST player in 25 years with three games of 25 or more points off the bench in the same season. In addition, to the 32 points at Georgetown, he also had 25 points versus DePaul on February 12 and 27 points versus Xavier on February 23. Last week, Bynum was named All-BIG EAST Second Team and he earned BIG EAST Sixth Man Award.
Horchler leads the Friars in rebounds this season, averaging 8.3 rpg. He also ranked second in the BIG EAST in rebounds per game. In addition, he leads the team in double-doubles with eight this season with four of them against BIG EAST opponents. He was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll twice this season.
