Friars' Second-Half Rally Falls Short At DePaul, 78-69

Brynn Farrell and Meghan Huerter each recorded career highs in the scoring column.

CHICAGO, ILL. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to BIG EAST foe DePaul, 78-69, on Dec. 28 at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Ill. The Friars trailed by as many as 24 points in the first half, and staged an impressive comeback in the second half to get within three on two occasions during the fourth quarter. 
 
1ST QUARTER:
• The Friars opened the game with five-straight points.
• DePaul used a 17-2 run to take a 17-7 lead.
Brynn Farrell converted a traditional three-point play for PC with 3:27 on the clock (17-10).
• DePaul went on an 8-0 spurt during a span of 1:13 to go ahead by 15 (25-10).
• The Blue Demons took a 30-15 lead into the intermission.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• The Blue Demons outscored the Friars 16-9 in the second quarter and took a 46-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.
• Farrell scored six of the Friars' nine points in the frame and paced Providence with 12 first-half points.
• Aneesah Morrow (17) and Rogers (16) combined for 33 of DePaul's 46 points.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• Providence opened the third quarter with a 7-0 run (48-29).
• The Friars cut the deficit to 15 with an 11-4 scoring edge heading into the media timeout at 4:45 (50-35).
Meghan Huerter hit a three coming out of the timeout and made it 50-38 game. 
• It marked the first of three triples for Huerter in the quarter as the sophomore guard got into double figures for the first time in her career with 2:59 to play in the third.
• Providence cut the deficit to 10 (56-46) on a lay-up from the left block at the 2:39 mark.
• A coast-to-coast lay-up by Kylee Sheppard and a jumper in the paint by Nariah Scott got the Friars within six (58-52) with 20-seconds left.
• The Friars outscored the Blue Demons 28-12 in the third frame.
• Providence held the Blue Demons scoreless in the final 2:04 of the quarter.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• Huerter opened the fourth quarter with her fifth triple of the game to get PC within three, 58-55.
• DePaul responded with five-straight points and extended its run to 9-2 to regain a double-digit advantage (67-57).
Janai Crooms scored back-to-back buckets and Olivia Olsen followed with a short jumper in the paint to make it a 67-63 game.
• The Friars' offense went silent for more than four minutes, and DePaul scored five-straight points to get out to a 74-66 lead.
• Farrell hit her fifth three of the game with 1:33 to play to halt the Friars' drought and help PC get back within five (74-69).
• DePaul closed out the game with four points from the free-throw line for a 78-69 victory.
 
NOTES:
• Farrell scored a career-high 21 points on 7-13 shooting from the field, including a 5-8 performance from beyond the arc.
• Huerter also notched a career-high in scoring with 15 points on 5-9 shooting from three-point territory.
• Olsen netted 11 points and added a team-best eight rebounds.
Kylee Sheppard added four points, six rebounds and a team-best seven assists, while Janai Crooms contributed six points, seven rebounds and five assists.
• Morrow finished the night with 29 points and 18 rebounds for DePaul, while Rogers chipped in 24 points and dished five assists.
• The Blue Demons were +10 in the scoring column from the free throw line. DePaul connected on 17-19 attempts from the charity stripe, while Providence hit 7-11 foul shots in the game.
• DePaul also benefited from a 24-10 scoring advantage in points off turnovers.
• Providence made a season-best 10 three-pointers in the game (10-22).
 
UP NEXT:
• The Friars return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 4 against No. 21/21 Creighton. The game will be played at D.J. Sokol Arena in Omaha, Neb. and is scheduled to tip at 7:00 p.m. (ET).
