Women's Basketball Defeats Hartford 60-30 In Opening Game Of Friar Thanksgiving Classic

PROVIDENCE, R.I.
 – The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Hartford, 60-30, on Friday, Nov. 25 in the opening game of the Friar Thanksgiving Classic. Olivia Olsen paced three Friars in double figures with 17 points.
 
1ST QUARTER:
• The Friars held a 12-4 advantage at the media timeout (4:58) on the strength of a 10-2 run.
• Olsen scored eight of the Friars' 10 points in the opening five minutes.
• Providence used a 17-0 run over the final 8:04 of the quarter to take a 23-4 edge at the intermission.
• The Friars shot 58.8-percent from the field (10-17), while the Hawks connected on just 2-16 attempts from the floor (.125).
 
2ND QUARTER:
Meghan Huerter opened the second with a triple to give the Friars a 26-4 lead.
• A 5-0 spurt by Hartford made it a 26-9 game, but Logan Cook got the Friars back on the board with a lay-up on the right block at the 6:34 mark (28-9).
• Providence outscored Hartford by a one-point margin in the second quarter (14-13) and went to the locker room at halftime with a 37-17 lead.
Logan Cook, Kylee Sheppard and Olivia Olsen each netted eight points in the first half.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• The Friars started the third quarter 0-6 from the field through the first 5:06 of play.
• Despite Providence's shooting woes, Hartford was unable to capitalize, connecting on just 1-9 attempts. 
• Providence led 38-20 at the media timeout (4:54).
Grace Efosa scored the Friars' first field goal of the quarter on a short jumper with 3:51 on the clock (40-20).
• Efosa's bucket sparked an 8-0 run to close the frame and put Providence ahead by 25 (45-20). 
 
4TH QUARTER:
• A 9-2 Friar run during a span of 4:05 in the fourth made it a 56-27 game.
• Providence maintained a comfortable lead throughout on its way to a 60-30 victory.
 
NOTES:
• Olsen finished the day with 17 points on 7-9 shooting from the floor and added four rebounds and two steals.
• Sheppard, who missed the Friars' last four games with an injury, returned to the floor and posted 11 points, four rebounds and three assists.
• Cook recorded a season-high 10 points for Providence, marking just the second double-digit scoring game of her career.
Janai Crooms contributed six points and a game-high nine rebounds and six assists.
• Providence held a 36-12 scoring advantage in the paint and dominated the boards, 51-33.
• The Friars also held a 13-0 edge in fast-break points.
• Providence shot 43.6-percent from the floor for the game (24-55), while Hartford checked in at 19.7-percent (12-61).
 
UP NEXT:
• Providence returns to the court for day two of the Friar Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday, Nov. 26 against Weber State. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m. and will follow a neutral match-up between Bryant and Hartford (1:00 p.m.).
