PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College volleyball team beat Xavier in four sets on Friday, Oct. 7 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. It marked the first home conference match of the season for the Friars and their first victory in BIG EAST play.
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Xavier took set one, 25-22.
- Xavier broke away from an early 5-5 tie to lead the Friars, 13-7.
- Providence was able to rally back to get within three (13-10).
- The Friars had a late rally which brought them within two (24-22) but it wasn't enough to overtake the Musketeers.
- Xavier held the lead to close out the set.
- Shaliyah Rhoden (Rowlett, Texas) paced the Friars' offense with four kills.
- Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.) collected a set-high six digs.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Friars battled back to win the second set, 30-28.
- Xavier took an early 6-3 lead. The Friars were able to battle back, notching five straight points to take the lead (8-6), forcing a Xavier timeout.
- At this point, Providence went on a 5-1 lead to distance themselves from the Musketeers, 13-9.
- Back-to-back kills by the Musketeers allowed them to tie the set, 16-16.
- The set featured eight ties down the stretch before the Friars notched back-to-back points for a 30-28 victory.
- Taylor paced the Friars, defensively, with 14 digs, while Caroline LaMacchia (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) added seven.
- Brielle Mullally (Garden Grove, Calif) and Emma Nelson (West Chester, Pa.) each added five kills.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence won the third set 25-20 to take the 2-1 edge in the match.
- Providence scored four-straight points to take an early 6-3 lead.
- The Musketeers stayed within five the rest of the set but the Friars were able to hold them off, finishing the third frame with back-to-back points for the 25-20 victory.
- Mullally and Nelson combined for nine kills 19 attempts.
- Sammie Ruggles (North Olmsted, Ohio) and Taylor added six and five digs, respectively.
- Ruggles and Mullally each had a team-best six assists.
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Friars took set four, 27-25.
- The Friars started the set with an early 6-3 lead.
- The Musketeers went on a 4-1 run to tie the set, 7-7.
- Xavier broke away with a 7-3 run to give them the 14-10 lead.
- Providence found themselves down 18-11, but rallied to score eight-straight points for the 19-18 lead.
- Ruggles recorded two kills in the eight-point rally.
- Mullally had a team-best four kills, Kayla Grant (Rowlett, Texas) added three more.
- The Friars went on a 5-1 run for the fourth set victory, and LaMacchia closed the match with a service ace.
MATCH NOTES:
- Mullally scored her fourth triple-double of the season with 17 kills, 19 assists and 13 digs. She also added three blocks.
- Mullally's 17 kills led the Friars, followed by Nelson's 13 kills on the night.
- Four Friars reached double-digit digs, led by Taylor who collected a team-best 33.
- This was the first Friar win over Xavier since 2017.
