Friar men set multiple short course school records vs. the Gaels.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College swimming and diving programs competed against Iona on Saturday, Oct. 29 at Taylor Natatorium in Providence, R.I. The Friar men defeated Iona, 168-120, and set three individual short course school records and one school record in a relay. The women's team fell to Iona 160-134.
 
Will Layden set a new mark in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 51.84. Layden owned the previous mark (51.97), which he set in 2021. Kevin Hood also knocked off his own record in the 100-meter breaststroke, with a time of 1:04.41. His previous record was set in 2021 at 1:04.51. Ryan Sharp set a new school mark in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 57.49. Mike Loftis held the previous mark of 57.78, which he set in 2010.
 
The Relay team of Alex Beauchene, Aidan Hughes, McGovern Brown and Layden completed the record-setting afternoon with a new school mark in the 400-meter freestyle relay with a time of 3:30.86. Layden also was a part of the previous record, set in 2021 (3:33.75), and was joined at the time by Preston Jennings, Max Smith and Jacob Conway.
 
Additional first-place finishes on the men's side vs. Iona included:
200-meter medley relay: McGovern Brown, Kevin Hood, Ryan Sharp, Will Layden) – 1:45.61
50-meter freestyle: Will Layden (23.76)
1-meter diving (Round 1): Will Karafanda (253.95 points); (Round 2): Will Karafanda (260.40)
200-meter backstroke: Noah San Vicente (2:09.22)
200-meter breaststroke: Kevin Hood (2:24.89(
 
On the women's side, Sally Alrutz claimed the top spot in the 100-meter backstroke (1:05.51). Annie Gathof also posted a first-place finish in the 400-meter freestyle (4:35.13).
 
The 400-meter freestyle relay team of Alrutz, Courtney Reilly, Grace Erickson and Taylor Loud topped the field with a time of 4:02.08.
 
Mal Moriarty collected 210.82 points in the 1-meter diving event and was closely contested by teammate Abby McGuire, who posted 210.60 points. Moriarty also took the top spot in the second round of the 1-meter diving competition, collecting 217.95 points.
 
The Friars return to action on Friday, Nov. 4 against Bryant. The men's meet will take place at Taylor Natatorium in Providence, R.I. The women will travel to Smithfield, R.I. to face the Bulldogs on Bryant's campus.
