Men’s Soccer Set To Face Georgetown And Butler In BIG EAST Action

Kickoff against Georgetown is set for Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 3:00 p.m.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's soccer team will travel to Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, Oct. 12. to take on BIG EAST rival, Georgetown, at 3:00 p.m. on Shaw Field. Later in the week, the Friars will welcome Butler to Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 7:00 p.m.

SCOUTING THE FRIARS… Providence enters Wednesday's game with a 3-3-5 overall record and a 1-1-3 record in BIG EAST play, ranking sixth in the conference. The Friars are looking to get back in the win column after going 0-1-1 last week. Providence suffered a 3-2 loss to Connecticut in Storrs, Conn. with goals scored by Gevork Diarbian (Cranston, R.I.) and Jason Pereira (Bloomfield, N.J.). The Huskies scored in the last minute of regulation get the edge over the Friars. Providence went on to tie Marquette, 3-3, with goals scored by Esben Wolf (Copenhagen, Denmark) and Gil Santos (Parede, Portugal), in addition to an own goal by the Golden Eagles. These goals marked the first of the season for Wolf and Pereira while Diarbian now leads the team with three. Armaan Wilson (Kleinburg, Ontario) was responsible for three corner kicks that were converted to goals and was credited for the assist on Pereira's goal against Connecticut. Providence is 1-1-2 on the road and 2-2-3 at home.
 
Junior Gevork Diarbian leads the Friars with nine points on three goals and three assists. Luis Garcia (Gran Canaria, Spain) and Wilson are tied for fifth in the conference in assists with four. Garcia, who also ranks fourth in assists per game (.44), owns six points on the season. 11 athletes have scored for the Friars in just as many games. Lukas Burns (Cinnaminson, N.J.) is tied for fourth in the BIG EAST with 33 saves. The junior goalkeeper averages .702 saves per game.

FRIARS PICKED FIRST IN BIG EAST PRESEASON POLL… The BIG EAST Conference announced its 2022 Men's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll on Wednesday, Aug. 17. The Friars were picked to finish first in the BIG EAST with Ramzi Qawasmy (Lansdale, Pa.)Luis Garcia and Gevork Diarbian earning selections for the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Qawasmy was also selected as a Preseason Co-Defensive Player of the Year. Qawasmy, Garcia and Diarbian also landed spots on the United Soccer Coaches Players to Watch Lists for Defenders, Midfielders and Forwards, respectively.

SCOUTING THE HOYAS… Georgetown enters Wednesday's match with a 4-4-3 overall record and a 2-2-1 record in conference play. The Hoyas are coming off a 1-1 tie at DePaul after three consecutive wins over Creighton (2-1), Bowling Green (1-0) and Butler (3-2) in their most recent games. The Hoya's are currently ranked fourth in the BIG EAST.
 
Georgetown is led by junior forward Marlon Tabora who has scored three goals and four assists while averaging 51.19 minutes per game. Tabora earned BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 10 after scoring the game winner for the Hoyas in their victory over Butler on Oct. 5 and followed up on Oct. 8 scoring the lone goal to tie DePaul. Freshman forward Jacob Murrell follows Tabora with nine points on three goals and three assists. The Hoyas are averaging 1.55 goals per game with an average of 17.55 shots per game.

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS… Butler enters the weekend with a 7-3-1 overall record (2-1-1 BIG EAST) after knocking off Marquette (3-1) on Sept. 30 and falling to Georgetown (2-3) on Oct. 5 in their most recent conference games. The Bulldogs are looking to advance their conference record when they welcome Villanova on Oct. 12 before traveling to Chapey Field to take on the Friars. Butler is currently ranked third in the BIG EAST.
 
The Bulldogs are led by freshman forward Palmer Ault who has 19 points on eight goals and three assists in 11 starts with the Hoyas. Ault earned Freshman of the Week on Oct. 3 after scoring two goals against Marquette. He currently leads the BIG EAST in points and is tied for first in goals. Senior forward Wilmer Cabrera Jr. follows Ault with 13 points on five goals and three assists. Cabrera Jr. earned Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 3 after notching a goal and two assists against Marquette. The senior forward leads the conference in shots per game (3.64). Butler leads the BIG EAST in goals (29) and is second to Creighton in assists (22).

WHAT'S NEXT…  The Friars will welcome St. John's University to Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 7:00 p.m. before traveling to Cincinnati, Ohio to face Xavier University on Oct. 29 at 7:00 p.m.
