PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence College junior guard
Janai Crooms (Cranston, R.I.) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Jan. 31. It marks Crooms' third appearance on the league's weekly honor roll this season, having previously been recognized on Dec. 13 and Nov. 15.
In two games vs. the top two teams in the BIG EAST last week, she averaged 21.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game. Crooms shot a blistering 68.4-percent from the field (13-19), including a 5-6 from three-point territory (.833). She also converted 12-16 free throws (.750) on the week.
Crooms scored a career-high 27 points on Jan. 30 as the Friars gave the No. 10/9 Connecticut Huskies all they could handle in a narrow 69-61 loss at Alumni Hall. She was 8-11 from the field (.727), including 3-4 from beyond the arc, and hit 8-10 attempts from the charity stripe. It marked the third time this season that Crooms eclipsed the 20-point mark.
Earlier in the week, she recorded a team-best 16 points and added six rebounds and two assists against Creighton.
Crooms has started 19 games for the Friars this season and leads the team in scoring (13.8 ppg), rebounding (8.7 rpg) and assists (4.8 apg). She is shooting 49-percent from the field on the season (99-204), and has come on of late from three-point territory (8-17, .471). Crooms also ranks second on the team in blocked shots (1.2 bpg) and steals (1.6 spg).
Providence returns to action on Friday, Feb. 4 against Marquette in Milwaukee, Wis. Tip-off is slated for 8:00 p.m. (ET) at the Al McGuire Center. The Friars remain on the road to face DePaul at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Ill. on Sunday, Feb. 6 at 3:00 p.m. (ET).
