Women’s Hockey Travels to Vermont

Puck Drop
Providence will travel to Burlington, Vt. to play a pair of road games on Jan. 21 and Jan. 22.  Puck drop is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Friday followed by a 3:00 p.m. puck drop on Saturday.   

Last Time Out
The Friars kicked off the new years with a road trip to Durham, N.H. to face to New Hampshire Wildcats. Providence dropped game one, 0-1, before falling to the Wildcats in game two, 3-1.

In game one, the teams skated through the opening two periods scoreless. New Hampshire netted the game-winning goal in the final 1:32 of regulation, for a 1-0 Wildcats win.

In the series finale, the first period was again scoreless for both teams before New Hampshire netted three goals back-to-back in the second period. Kailey Sato (South Pasadena, Calif.) put in the lone goal for the Friars, 1-3, at the 17:29 mark of the second period for her first collegiate goal.

Scouting the Friars
The Friars are currently 8-7-5 overall and 5-6-2 in Hockey East play. Nineteen Friars have tallied a point this season with 14 players recording a goal. Two players have reached double digits in Bochna (14) and Lunny (12).
Lindsay Bochna (Toronto, Ontario) leads the Friars in points with 14. Bochna has a team-high six goals while adding eight assists on the season. Hayley Lunny (Bedford, N.Y.) trails Bochna with 12 points, and is tied for a team-high in assists (eight) accompanied by four goals. Caroline Peterson (East Falmouth, Mass.) and Brooke Becker (Orchard Park, N.Y.) hold nine and eight points, respectively.

Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) and Mireille Kingsley (Subdury, Ontario) have both seen time in net for the Friars, with 13 and seven starts, respectively. Abstreiter has tallied a total of 396 saves and holds a 1.68 goals against average with a .947 save percentage. Kingsley has 190 total saves with a 1.40 goals against average and .950 save percentage.


Hjalmarsson with Team Sweden
Senior Sara Hjalmarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden) has been named to the Sweden Olympic Women's Ice Hockey Team for the 2022 Beijing Olympics.

Having previously represented Sweden in the 2018 Winter Games in PyeongChang, Hjalmarsson will be making the second Olympic appearance of her hockey career. Hjalmarsson is the 11th player in program history to compete in the Olympics and is one of only six Friars to appear in multiple Olympic games.

In addition to Hjalmarsson's Olympic selection by Team Sweden, the Providence College women's hockey program also will be represented in the 2022 Beijing Games by Associate Head Coach Ali Domenico, who was selected as an Assistant Coach for Team Canada.

Scouting Vermont
Vermont is 13-9-2 overall and 10-6-1 in the Hockey East. The Catamounts sit in the number three spot in the Hockey East rankings. Vermont is coming off of a sweep at Holy Cross, taking game one, 3-1, before defeating the Crusaders in the series finale, 9-0.

As a team, Vermont averages 2.9 goals per game while giving up 2.3. The Catamounts convert of 20.6% of power play chances and kill off 91.2% of penalties.

Who to Watch
Vermont is similar to the Friars with a balanced scoring attack. Corinne McCool, Sini Karjalainen and Maude Poulin-Labelle each hold 17 points on the season. Three other players are in double figures with 13 separate goal scorers.

The Catamount's scoring is led by Maude Poulin-Labelle who has 28 points on the season with a team-high 17 assists with 11 goals. Theresa Schafzahl follows Poulin-Labelle with 24 points on a team-high 13 goals with 11 assists.

Blanka Skodova and Jessie McPherson have split time in the net, with 10 game starts each. Skodova holds a 1.99 goals against average with .900 save percentage while McPherson has a 2.15 goals against average and a .895 save percentage.
