PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's soccer team will host Boston University on Thursday, Sept. 9 at 6:00 p.m. on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. The Friars are coming off a 2-0-0 week after defeating Stony Brook, 4-0, on Sept. 2 and then traveled to West Long Branch, N.J. to beat Monmouth, 3-1. Providence has gone 2-0-0 at home this season, winning both games 4-0 with four different goal scorers each match.

Friars Shutout Stony Brook… The Friars shut out Stony Brook, 4-0, on Sept. 2 in Providence, R.I. Junior
Alexis Rothmann (Norwell, Mass.) scored her first career goal early in the first half, giving the Friars a 1-0 lead. Fifth-year
Amber Birchwell (Mastic, N.Y.) started off the scoring for Providence in the second half, scoring off a corner in the 55
th minute. Birchwell now has 38 career points and is currently ranked 16
th among the program's all-time scoring leaders. Sophomore
Meg Hughes (Rochester, Mass) scored off a pass from sophomore
Kyla Gallagher (Farmington, Conn.) in the 61
st minute. Gallagher closed out the scoring for the Friars in the 63
rd minute, notching her second goal on Chapey Field this season. Sophomore
Emma Bodmer (Monroe Township, N.J.) earned her second shutout of the season.
Friars Earn First Road Win… Providence beat Monmouth, 3-1, on Sunday, Sept. 5 at Hesse Field. Hughes and freshman
Gillian Kenney (Hanover, Mass.) led the Friars offensively scoring four and three points, respectively. Hughes put Providence on the scoreboard early in the first half and then scored her second goal of the game within the first two minutes of the second half. Kenney scored her first collegiate goal as a Friar in the 32
nd minute. This marked the first time that Hughes has scored two goals in a game and she has earned a point in every game this season.
Hughes, Bodmer Earn BIG EAST Weekly Awards… Hughes, who was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, led the BIG EAST in scoring with seven points off three goals and an assist. With seven points on the week, Hughes became one of the program's all-time scoring leaders as she ranks 26th with 26 points. She has accomplished this feat in just her 17
th game.
Bodmer was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. She went 2-0-0 with a shared shutout and three saves on Chapey Field against Stony Brook and then had one stop at Monmouth.
Series History Against Boston University… The Friars hold a 2-5-0 record against the Terriers. In their last meeting on Sept. 1, 2016, Providence beat Boston University, 2-0.
Scouting The Terriers… Boston University enters Thursday with a 2-3-1 overall record and are coming off a 1-0 win against Rhode Island. The Terriers were selected to finish second in the Patriot League Preseason Poll. Senior Jenna Oldham was named the Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. During the spring 2021 season, Oldham either scored or assisted on every Terrier goal.
Friars Picked Fourth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll… The BIG EAST Conference announced its Women's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll on Thursday, August 12. The Friars were picked to finish fourth in the BIG EAST behind Georgetown, Butler and UConn.
Hughes was the lone Friar to receive preseason recognition as a member of the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Last season, Hughes played in all 12 games for the Friars and appeared in the starting lineup four times. She led Providence in points (14), assists (six) and was tied for first on the team in goals (four). At the conclusion of the season, she was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST Second Team and BIG EAST All-Freshman Team.
