PROVIDENCE, R.I. – It was announced today [May 26] that incoming Providence College student-athlete Emily Archibald was named 2020-21 Gatorade Maine Girls Basketball Player of the Year. It marks the second time that she has earned the honor during her career. Archibald signed a National Letter of Intent in November to attend Providence College and compete as a member of the women's basketball team, beginning in the fall of 2021.
The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. The selection process is administered by the Gatorade Player of the Year Selection Committee, which works with top sport-specific experts and a media advisory board of accomplished, veteran prep sports journalists to determine the state winners in each sport.
The 6-foot, 2-inch senior wing averaged a double-double with 24.6 points and 20.7 rebounds per game, while also contributing 3.7 blocks, 3.5 steals and 3.2 assists per contest at Kennebunk High School this past season. A two-time Maine Basketball Rankings Player of the Year, who was also named 2021 Miss Maine Basketball, Archibald was a four-year team MVP and four-year captain en route to becoming the only player in school history to reach 1,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, 200 assists, 200 steals and 200 blocks in her career.
