Women's Basketball Falls To Marquette In BIG EAST Quarterfinals

UNCASVILLE, CONN. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to No. 2 seed Marquette in the BIG EAST Quarterfinal, 68-43, on March 6 at Mohegan Sun Arena.

FIRST QUARTER:
• Marquette got out to a 9-0 lead, while the Friars committed five turnovers through the first 5:32 of the game.
• Providence missed its first six shot attempts before cashing in at the 3:06 mark on a Chanell Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) jumper at the top of the key (9-2).
• The Golden Eagles kept their foot on the gas, hitting back-to-back threes to mount a 15-2 advantage.
• Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) and Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, N.Y.) finished off the scoring in the quarter with back-to-back buckets for Providence, closing the deficit to 15-6.
• The Friars shot just 25-percent (3-12) from the field, while Marquette hit 46-percent from the floor (6-13).

SECOND QUARTER:
• Sophia Widmeyer (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) opened the quarter with a traditional three-point play to get Providence within six (15-9).
• The Golden Eagles responded with six-straight points in just under three minutes of action to regain a double-digit margin (21-9).
• Widmeyer halted Marquette's run with a triple from the right wing (21-12).
• Marquette extended its run to 18-3 during a span of nearly eight minutes before Widmeyer hit her second three of the game with 37-seconds on the clock (33-15).
• The Friars forced a turnover on Marquette's ensuing offensive possession, and Widmeyer got another clean look at a three with two-seconds remaining, but the ball rimmed out.
• Marquette took a 33-15 advantage into halftime.

• Providence was held scoreless for nearly three minutes before Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.) hit a jumper out of a timeout at the 4:53 mark (39-21).
• Geary got two more at the free-throw line 30-seconds later to give Providence an 8-6 scoring edge in the quarter.
• Marquette came out of a scoring drought of their own with a pair of free throws from Camryn Taylor on the Golden Eagles' next offensive possession, but Kyra Spiwak (Arlington Heights, Ill.) responded with her first points of the game on a three from the right win (41-26).
• Providence cut the lead to 15 in the quarter, but Marquette closed the third quarter with five unanswered points.
• The Golden Eagles held a 48-28 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.

• Marquette held Providence scoreless over the first 4:04 of the quarter, outscoring the Friars 10-0.
• The Friars answered with a 7-0 run (58-35), before the Golden Eagles converted a three-pointer from the right win with 3:56 to play.
• The Golden Eagles outscored the Friars 20-15 in the fourth quarter to claim the 68-43 victory.
