Cross Country Competes At BIG EAST Championship

The Friar women finished third (61 points) and the men finished fifth (127 points).

Cary, N.C.- The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams competed at the BIG EAST Championships at the WakeMed Cross Country Course in Cary, N.C. on March 5. The Friar women placed third (61 points) and the Friar men finished fifth (127 points). Maria Coffin (Annapolis, Md.) crossed the line first for the Friar women, placing fourth overall, in a time of 20:44.2. Marcelo Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) finished first for the Friar men, placing eighth overall, in a time of 23:33.4.
 
Coffin, Lilly Tuck (Sunderland, Canada), Orla O'Connor (Waterford, Ireland) and Laura Mooney (Cappincur, Ireland) were in the lead pack through 3K, all positioning themselves in the top-10. At the 4.7K mark, the four Friar women stayed in the lead pack of seven runners. The last 1.3K of the race, two Georgetown runners broke away from the rest of the pack and went on to place one and two. Coffin was right behind the lead pack, finishing fourth (20:44.2)
 
Tuck crossed the line in eighth (20:54.0), finishing three spots ahead of last year. O'Connor placed tenth (20:57.2), a 23-spot improvement from last year. Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England) made a late kick to finish in 17th (21:08.0). Mooney finished in 22nd (21:13.4).
 
The finishes by Coffin, Tuck and O'Connor earned All-BIG EAST honors. This is Coffin and Tuck's second All-BIG EAST Honor for cross country. O'Connor earns her first All-BIG EAST honor.
 
On the men's side, Rocha was the first Friar to cross the line in eighth (23:33.4). His eighth-place finish is a 14-spot improvement from last year. The next two Friars to finish were Ryan Gallagher (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) and Liam Back (New Plymouth, New Zealand). Gallagher finished in 21st place (23:50.4) and Back in 29th (24:11.4).
 
The finish by Rocha earns All-BIG EAST honors. This is Rocha's first All-BIG EAST honor for cross country.
