PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team defeated the Villanova Wildcats in five sets, 19-25, 23-25, 25-16, 25-22, 15-12, on Friday, March 26 in Alumni Hall. The Friars made a comeback, winning the final three sets after losing the first two. Providence improves to a 4-3 BIG EAST record, 6-3 overall. Villanova drops to 4-5 overall, 3-4 in BIG EAST play.
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: The first set was a back-and-forth affair, with the Friars and Wildcats tying six times before the Wildcats took the set, 25-19, off of a 4-1 run.
Jennifer Leitman (Irvine, Calif.) led the Friars with four kills on 12 total attacks and a .167 hitting percentage.
Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) registered five assists to go with seven digs.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Friars fought hard, going on a late 4-0 run to close in on the Wildcats at 20-21, but Villanova took the set 25-23.
Leitman paced the set with four kills on ten total attacks (.100 hitting percentage)
Barber registered eight assists and two digs.
Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.) registered a set-high three digs.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence held the lead throughout the entire first set, taking the match 25-16.
Sasha Rudich (Austin, Texas) recorded a team-high three kills on three total attacks for a 1.000 hitting percentage. Leitman also recorded three kills.
Barber tallied six assists and three digs.
Providence held Villanova to a .053 hitting percentage.
The Friars provided a strong presence at the net to record six blocks.
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: The first half of the set was back-and-forth until Providence went on a 4-0 run to create some space between the teams. Villanova started to close in on the Friars at the end of the set but Providence pulled through, 25-21.
Emma Nelson (West Chester, Pa.) had a match-high seven kills on eight total attacks for a .750 hitting percentage. Leitman recorded six kills in the set.
Barber also recorded a match-high 14 assists. She also added two digs.
FIFTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: Both teams went point for point in the beginning of the set, until Providence broke ahead from an 11-11 tie. Providence went on a 4-1 run to claim the final set 15-12.
Nelson recorded a set-high four kills to put the Friars ahead in the deciding set.
Taylor paced the Friars with three digs, a set-high.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:
Leitman recorded a team-high 19 kills. She also tallied six digs.
Nelson recorded 18 kills on 36 total attacks with a .361 hitting percentage.
Barber and Taylor tallied double-digit digs, both with 15.
As a team, the Friars had 59 kills on 143 total attacks, 54 digs, 49 assists and ten total team blocks.
WHAT'S NEXT: Providence returns to Alumni Hall tomorrow, March 27, at 6:30 p.m. for the series finale against the Villanova Wildcats. The Friars will honor their graduating seniors at the match.
