Kick-off is set for Thursday, March 18 at 3:00 p.m. in Queens, N.Y.
PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College women's soccer team will head to the Queens, N.Y. to take on the St. John's Red Storm on Thursday, March 18. The Friars enter the match 5-1-0 overall, including a 3-1-0 mark in BIG EAST play. The Red Storm hold a 5-2-0 overall record(2-2-0 BIG EAST).
Friars All-Time Against The Red Storm… Providence holds a 17-15-3 record all-time against St. John's. In the last outing between the teams (2019), the Friars shutout the Red Storm, 4-0. Hannah McNulty, Chloe Ortolano, Amber Birchwell and Elayna Grillakis each scoredgoals for the Friars.
Best Start Since 2010… Providence's 5-1-0 record marks the best record since 2010. With a win, it will tie the Friars' 6-1-0 start in 2010.
Clean Sheets… The Friars have recorded four shut-out victories in their first six games this season. It's the most shut-outs in a six-game stand to start the season since 2018. That squad also picked up four clean sheets in the first six games, on their way to a program-best 10 shutouts for the year.
Rookie Impact… Through six games, four of the top-five point scorers on the team are freshmen. Meg Hughes leads the team with seven points on two goals and three assists. Kyla Gallagher ranks second among her teammates, with five points (1g/3a). Samantha Adams and Avery Snead are tied for third in scoring with four points, having scored two goals apiece. Overall, Hughes, Gallagher, Adams and Snead have accounted for seven of the Friars' 13 goals overall.
Friars Blank Wildcats… Providence shutout Villanova, 4-0, on Sunday, March 14 in Providence, R.I. Hannah McNulty, Samantha Adams, Elayna Grillakis and Meg Hughes tallied the goals for the Friars. Kyla Gallagher pitched in with two assists. Emma Bodmer and Sam Murray combined for the shutout. This is the fourth shutout of the season for the Friars.
Snead's Header The Difference As Friars Down Pirates, 1-0… Providence defeated Seton Hall, 1-0, on Thursday, March 11 in South Orange, N.J. Avery Snead scored the game-winning goal for the Friars in the 62nd minute off of a corner kick from Elayna Grillakis This is Snead's second game-winning goal of the season. Emma Bodmer recorded three saves in the shutout.
Friars Split Opening Week Of BIG EAST Play… Providence split its first two BIG EAST games of the season. In its first conference game of the season, on March 4, Providence defeated UConn, 2-1, in Providence, R.I. After falling behind 1-0, Esther Ronn scored late in the first half to tie the game to enter the break. Avery Snead scored in the 72nd minute from a header to the lower left of the net from an Amber Birchwell cross deep into the box. Emma Bodmer (registered six saves on the afternoon.
On Sunday, March 7, the Friars fell to the No. 21 Georgetown Hoyas, 1-0, in Washington, D.C. The Hoyas scored the lone goal of the game in the 22nd minute.
McNulty Moving Up… Hannah McNulty currently ranks sixth all-time in career scoring at Providence. McNulty has scored 24 goals and has added seven assists for 55 points during her career. Through six games of the 2021 spring season, McNulty is tied for first on the team in goals (two).
Filling Big Shoes… Freshman Emma Bodmer has settled in as the Friars' starting goalkeeper . Bodmer replaces former Friar and current NWSL goalie Shelby Hogan. Hogan was a three-time All-BIG EAST honoree and 2019 BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year. Bodmer has started all six games for Providence. She has recorded 17 saves and has allowed just two goals. Bodmer currently has two shut-outs, two combined shut-out and a .895 save percentage. Bodmer has been named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week twice this season.
Shut-Out The Ocean State… Providence defeated Ocean State foes, Rhode Island and Bryant, by a combined 6-0 score in back-to-back matches to open the season.
Providence defeated Rhode Island, 2-0, in its season opener on Feb. 14. Senior Amber Birchwell (Mastic, N.Y.) and freshman Meg Hughes each tallied a goal in the second half for the Friars. Freshman Emma Bodmer registered three saves in her first career start and shut-out in a Friars uniform.
Providence defeated Bryant, 4-0, on Sunday, Feb. 21. Kyla Gallagher, Anna Kalooski , Samantha Adams and Hannah McNulty each tallied second-half goals for the Friars. Emma Bodmer and Sam Murray combined for the shut-out. Bodmer has not allowed a goal this season in 166:26 minutes of action, while Murray has held opponents scoreless for 13:32.
Awards All Around… On March 15, Avery Snead earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week and Emma Bodmer was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll following their performances in the 1-0 victory over Seton Hall and 4-0 victory over Villanova.
Avery Snead was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll (3/8) following her performance in the 2-1 BIG EAST opening game victory over UConn. Snead scored on her only shot attempt of the game, and it marked her first career goal in a Friar uniform.

Scouting the Red Storm… The Red Storm hold a 5-2-0 overall record, 2-2-0 in BIG EAST play. St. John's was selected fifth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll East Division with 11 points. The Red Storm have been shut out the last two games against UConn and Georgetown.
Leading the offensive charge for St. John's has been Jessica Garziano. Garziano leads St. John's in points (11) and goals (five), including two game-winners.
Preseason BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year and unanimous Preseason All-BIG EAST selection Zsani Kajan ranks tied for second in points (five) and goals (two) for the Red Storm.
The starting goalkeeper for St. John's has been Naya Lipkins. Lipkins has allowed four goals in 576 minutes of play. She holds a .810 save percentage.
Friars Picked Third in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll East Division… The BIG EAST Conference announced its Women's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll on Monday, Feb. 1. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the BIG EAST has split into two divisions for the upcoming season. The East Division is comprised of: Georgetown, Villanova, Providence, UConn, St. John's and Seton Hall. The MidWest Division is: Xavier, DePaul, Butler, Marquette and Creighton. The Friars were picked to finish third among 6 BIG EAST schools behind Georgetown and Villanova.
McNulty was the lone Friar to receive preseason recognition. McNulty was a unanimous selection on the Preseason-All BIG EAST Team. She started all 20 games for the Friars last season. She led the team in points (18) and goals (nine), including four game-winners. McNulty went on to earn All-BIG EAST First-Team honors at the conclusion of the season.
Newcomers… The Friars welcome eight freshman and two transfers to the squad. Incoming freshman include Emma Bodmer (Monrow Township, N.J.), Emily McCalligett (Warwick, R.I.), Meg Hughes (Rochester, Mass.), Anna Kalooski(Greene, R.I.), Avery Snead (Wrentham, Mass.), Kyla Gallagher (Farmington, Conn.), Grace Murphy (Penfield, N.Y.) and Samantha Adams (Northport, N.Y.). Esther Rønn (Copenhagen, Denmark) joins the Friars after spending a year at the University of Copenhagen while Sara Vijfhuizen (Bilthoven, The Netherlands) transferred from NAIA's University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. Both transfers have three years of eligibility.
Up Next… Providence stay on the road to take on UConn. Kick-off is set for Sunday, March 21 at 2:00 p.m. in Storrs, Conn. In the first meeting, on March 4, the Friars defeated the Huskies, 2-1.
