Women's Hoops Closes Regular Season With 75-49 Loss To No. 24/23 DePaul

Friars will begin BIG EAST Tournament action on March 5 at Mohegan Sun Arena.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to No. 24/23 DePaul in its regular-season finale on Feb. 27, 75-49.
 
FIRST QUARTER:
• DePaul took a 17-6 lead in the first quarter with 4:22 on the clock, before Kyra Spiwak (Arlington, Heights, Ill.) drilled a three and Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.) knocked down a jumper from the left elbow (17-11).
• The Blue Demons took a 22-15 advantage into the break, after Andrea Cooper (Edmond, Okla.) converted a lay-up at the buzzer for Providence.
• The Friars shot just 37.5-percent from the field in the opening 10 minutes (6-16), while the Blue Demons connected on 52.9-percent of their attempts (9-17), including 4-8 from three-point territory.
 
SECOND QUARTER:
• DePaul started the second quarter on an 8-0 run to gain a 15-point advantage (30-15).
Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) halted the run with a lay-up at the 5:37 mark (30-17).
• The Blue Demons extended their run to 16-2 to take a 38-17 advantage.
Sophia Widmeyer (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) hit a triple for Providence with 2:35 on the clock, which started a 7-3 Friars run to make it a 41-24 game with 1:08 to play.
• The Friars held the Blue Demons to just one point in the final 2:18 of the half, and DePaul took a 42-24 lead into the locker room.
• Geary paced the Friars with six points and Spiwak chipped in five for the Friars.
• Lexi Held led DePaul with 10 points, while Deja Church and Sonya Morris each contributed eight points.
 
THIRD QUARTER:
• DePaul outscored Providence 16-4 over the first 4:21 of the third, which was fueled by four three-point buckets.
• Baskerville scored the Friars first six points in the quarter on 3-3 shooting.
• Providence went on a 9-0 run over a three-minute span to cut the deficit to 58-37. 
• DePaul was scoreless for over four minutes before Darrione Rogers hit a fade-away jumper on the baseline at the 1:28 mark.
• Providence trailed 64-37 heading into the final frame.
 
FOURTH QUARTER:
• Providence started the fourth quarter with four-straight points before Doug Bruno called for timeout with 7:38 on the clock.
• Held came out of the timeout to her fourth three-pointer of the game and 14th overall for the Blue Demons.
• Geary answered with back-to-back buckets, and Spiwak added a lay-up for a 6-0 run.
• DePaul responded with a 6-0 run of its own on back-to-back threes by Rogers and Held to force a Providence timeout at 4:11 (73-47). 
• Both teams managed just one bucket each in the final stretch of the game as DePaul went on to win 75-49.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Geary finished the day with 12 points, four rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocked shots.
• Baskerville also added 12 points in addition to five rebounds, two steals and two blocks.
• Spiwak contributed nine points, while Olivia Orlando (Georgetown, Mass.) hauled in a team-high seven boards.
• Held paced all scorers with 21 points and Morris registered a double-double on 10 points and 11 rebounds.
• DePaul finished the game 28-60 (.467) from the field, including 16-29 from beyond the arc (.552).
• Providence shot 36.8-percent from the field (21-57) and had a tough day from three-point territory (.118, 2-17).
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will begin play at the 2021 BIG EAST Women's Basketball Tournament on March 5. Providence will claim either the No. 7 seed or the No. 8 seed. A complete bracket will be released by the league off at the conclusion of the regular-season slate on Monday.
